Hiking in the Dolomites

Get out of everyday life and into a wild adventure, we swap stress for excitement and dive into a mountain landscape like no other. Meter by meter we climb higher and enjoy the panorama. What unfolds before our eyes in the Dolomites is hardly describable. The Three Peaks, the Rosengarten, and especially the mighty Marmolada create an impressive picture that does not get boring even on the tenth visit.

The mountain region in the east of South Tyrol is well known to be very popular among mountaineers and climbers, but the Dolomites are also well suited for classic hikes and you can reach some peaks without climbing. In the mid-altitude zones, on a hike from hut to hut, both experienced hikers and families feel especially comfortable. Through blooming alpine meadows, past beautiful mountain lakes, hiking trails lead in difficulty levels from easy to medium. For difficult tours, you should be very familiar with hiking and have surefootedness and good fitness. Do not take the tours in the Dolomites lightly and prepare adequately, gather all the information you can, and realistically assess your abilities.

What the weather is doing: what you need to pay attention to on a hike

As with any tour in alpine terrain, it is especially important to keep an eye on the weather. Weather changes are not uncommon in the Dolomites. Before you start your hiking tours, always check the weather forecast and talk to experienced people who are familiar with the region – the hut keepers know the area like no one else, you can rely on their expert advice. The climate in the Dolomites also plays a role in the equipment. The higher you climb, the lower the temperatures get. Equip yourself with clothing in the multi-layer principle and you can plunge into the adventure. By the way, the best months for hiking in the Dolomites are in summer from July to September – rather early September. During this period, the mountains are mostly snow-free and the weather is more stable.

Enrosadira – Legends of the Mountains

When evening falls and dusk slowly sets in, the Dolomites come to life. The well-known natural spectacle "Enrosadira", Ladin for alpenglow, occurs depending on the season and the position of the sun when the diligent hiker slowly comes to rest. In colors ranging from orange to bright red, the otherwise rugged mountains glow in a gentle light that radiates an unusual but attractive warmth. Illuminated by the last rays of the sun of the day, the mountain glow is a phenomenon you definitely should not miss. You have especially good chances to see the phenomenon yourself here:

  • Rosengarten in Fassatal from Pozza di Fassa
  • Sciliar and Sassolungo from Seiser Alm
  • Sass Pordoi from Campitello di Fassa
  • Cimon della Pala from Passo Rolle
  • Tre Cime di Lavaredo from Val di Landro
  • Pale di San Martino from San Martion di Castrozza

By the way, there is also a legend about Enrosadira that explains the phenomenon. Long ago, the stone Rosengarten was a real garden completely covered with red roses. When the king of the dwarfs one day kidnapped the princess of a neighboring kingdom and was pursued by soldiers, they found him only because of his footprints that he left in the Rosengarten. As a result, the king turned the roses to stone so they would never betray him again and people couldn’t find him either by day or by night. However, he forgot the dusk. Because between day and night the roses still glow today in the brightest colors.
