Through the Scheldt River ValleyThis route, part of the so-called Rivierenland Hiking Network, follows the Scheldt along a scenic stretch featuring meanders and an old river branch just before the small town of Rupelmonde, which was an important trading center in the Middle Ages and is known as the birthplace of the cartographer Gerhart Mercator, who later moved to Duisburg. The hike follows a wide arc from Temse to Bornem and makes use of two small (free) bicycle ferries across the Scheldt and its tributary, the Durme. We can expect plenty of water, pastures, and forests, mostly along dike paths. The return trip is by train across the Scheldt Bridge. At 374 meters, this is Belgium’s longest bridge and the last one across the Scheldt before its mouth. The first of three bridges at this location was built in 1870 under the supervision of Gustave Eiffel.

Through the Schelde lowlands with lakes, dikes, and moorsBetween Schoonaarde and Wetteren, a large lowland with many meadows, moors, and lakes extends north of the Schelde. The lowland of the Kalkense Meersen, shaped by an old river arm, is an important breeding ground for birds. The hike partially leads over dikes alternating along the Schelde and through the inland. The starting point is Schoonarde, located on the Schelde, a popular mooring place for ships for centuries, as the name literally suggests, meaning "good land." The destination Wetteren was formerly the site of gunpowder production and flax processing. Until the mid-19th century, linen weaving was significant here as in other parts of Flanders but could not compete with the industrialized British textile production.
