This route, part of the so-called Rivierenland Hiking Network, follows the Scheldt along a scenic stretch featuring meanders and an old river branch just before the small town of Rupelmonde, which was an important trading center in the Middle Ages and is known as the birthplace of the cartographer Gerhart Mercator, who later moved to Duisburg. The hike follows a wide arc from Temse to Bornem and makes use of two small (free) bicycle ferries across the Scheldt and its tributary, the Durme. We can expect plenty of water, pastures, and forests, mostly along dike paths. The return trip is by train across the Scheldt Bridge. At 374 meters, this is Belgium’s longest bridge and the last one across the Scheldt before its mouth. The first of three bridges at this location was built in 1870 under the supervision of Gustave Eiffel.
From the Bornem train station, Stationsstraat leads westward into the center of Bornem. The town’s name likely refers—as with its German sister city Bornheim, which has a similar-sounding name—to a settlement near a well, and possibly also to a border. The western end of the square is marked by the Landhuis, built in the 19th century on the site of the old town hall, which houses the tourist information office and a hiking map. Pass the building on the left, then turn right, and at the next intersection, turn left (Kasteelstraat). At the edge of town, the street turns into a tree-lined avenue, which we follow to the castle park entrance of Kasteel van Bornem, accessible only by guided tour. There, the “Wandelaar” signpost and the white-red trail marker (wr) direct us left onto Donkweg, a beautiful tree-lined avenue. At a T-intersection, turn right (wr) and take a wide left curve around the wooded estate Het Graafschap. At the northernmost point, we pass a bird snare on the right—built
