The GR 11, also known as the Ruta Transpirenaica or Senda Pirenaica, is a long-distance hiking trail that crosses the Pyrenees in Spain from west to east.
The GR 11 begins spectacularly on the Atlantic Ocean and combines coastal flair, low mountain ranges and Basque villages on its first stage to create a varied start.
Large loop with an ascent overlooking the steep valley of the Bidassoa and Irun, to approach a ridge line and cross the Zigorriaga and the Manddale. From these summits, magnificent views of the coast from Hendaye to Saint-Jean-de-Luz, and Biarritz in good weather.
From the summits, you can contemplate to the east the dominant Rhune, and to the south the valleys of Spain.
On the return, after passing by Lake Xoldo, you will also cross the Xoldoko Gaina which offers an unobstructed panorama of the Basque coast from Irun to Biarritz. then you will follow the partridge rock, which forms an impressive viewpoint overlooking Biriatou.
Original loop through Spain to reach the well-known Ibanteli passing through Spain and easily climbing Mount Labeaga in Spain along the way. Classic return via the Lizarrieta pass and the Palombières path.
The Rhune dominates you for most of the ascent, at the 2 summits and part of the descent. From the Ibanteli, on the other side of the Rhune, you can also see the magnificent cliff of L'Artxuria (Arxuria) to the southeast.
After descending from Ibanteli, on the way to the Lizarrieta pass, take the path to the left of the direct track to admire the "giants of Ibanteli" who once protected people (corten steel statues lining the trail).
Short circular walk on the French side of the Bidasoa ValleyThe French Basque Country near the coast of the Bay of Biscay is heavily built up and quite hectic. The famous golf towns of Bayonne, Biarritz and Saint-Jean-de-Luz, as well as the entire coastline known as the Corniche Basque, attract many visitors, especially in the summer months. The hinterland, on the other hand, is less frequented. Here you can still discover secluded and recommendable hiking areas, such as this tour to the summit of the Manttale (572 m) and to Lac d'Ibardin (also Lac de Xoldokogaina).
Pleasant Sunday excursion to the land of Ramuntcho, which offers a beautiful view of the Basque coast, the Bidasoa valley dominated by the 3 Couronne, and above all the impressive Rhune pyramid. The Mandale mountain is hiked with a nice panoramic view. Another hiking point is Lake Ibardin (or Poiriers).
A easy trail through the undergrowth leads back to Ibardin.
Diverse Start: From the Atlantic to the Basque HillsBefore we begin our Pyrenees crossing, the French coastal town of Hendaye, popular with surfers, invites us to refresh ourselves in the Atlantic waters, which can be as warm as 24 degrees Celsius. It will take up to 53 days until we can dip our feet in the cool Mediterranean waters. The first stage of our Pyrenees crossing makes it easy to leave everyday life behind and immediately prepares us for the rolling ups and downs of the Basque Country. The fantastic panoramic view from the summit of Xoldokogaina at 486 m, visible on clear days, delays our farewell to the sea a little longer and lets us look back at the first kilometers already behind us. After the peace in nature, the bustle at the Col d’Ibardin on the border between Spain and France surprises us all the more. Locals and tourists come here to stock up on food, tobacco, and alcohol at significantly cheaper Spanish prices on the Spanish side. After passing the pass, it becomes increasingly shaded, and along the stream, especially in high summer, pleasantly cool temperatures prevail.
