Österreich höchstes Café befindet sich auf dem Gipfel des Pitztaler Gletschers, und zwar in – wie der Name schon vorwegnimmt – 3440 m Höhe. So liegt den Gästen bei Kaffee, Kuchen und kleinen herzhaften Gerichten die wunderschöne Bergwelt sprichwörtlich zu Füßen. Einer der schönsten Blicke führt hinüber zur 3774 m hohen Wildspitze, der höchsten Erhebung Tirols. 

Dabei ist das Café 3440 ganz leicht für Jedermann zu erreichen. Der Gletscherexpress bringt die Gäste zunächst auf den Pitztal Gletscher, mit der neuen Wildspitzbahn wurde 2012 eine direkte Verbindung zum Gipfel geschaffen.

Natürlich ist es nicht ganz einfach, in dieser enormen Höhe Gastronomie zu betreiben: Sämtliche Kuchen, Torten und Snacks werden in der Küche und der Backstube des Gletscherrestaurants zubereitet und fahren – ebenso wie die Besucher – mit der Bergbahn nach oben. 

Nach den leckeren Köstlichkeiten im Café sollte man unbedingt noch die paar Stufen zur Aussichtsplattform aufsteigen. Durch das Fernglas blickt man bei klarer Sicht über ein wunderbares Panorama aus Zugspitze, Kaunertaler Gletscher, Stubaier Gletscher, Ötztaler Gletscher, Rostizkogel, Zuckerhütl und viele Gipfel mehr.
