Rhine Floodplain Route Karlsruhe - Kehl, 102 km Stage 1   Stage 2   Stage 3   Stage 4 Rhine Floodplain Route Karlsruhe - Kehl: Stage 2 After Plittersdorf, we enter the Rastatt floodplain landscape with its unique fauna and flora. Landscape-wise, we move through one of the last primeval forests in Europe. Many rare animals are offered a safe refuge with the possibility to survive. Rare plants have settled on the most diverse soils and natural conditions or lead an isolated life here, protected by the Baden-Württemberg state nature conservation authority. How does the picture change when we move from the biotope into the human-shaped biosphere: the Rhine, canalized; logged forests, agricultural landscapes - but not dead. Hikers are advised to take a minute or two to perceive and internalize the many impressions.

Rheinauenweg Karlsruhe - Kehl, 102 km Stage 1   Stage 2   Stage 3   Stage 4 Rheinauenweg Karlsruhe - Kehl: Stage 1 Officially, the "Rheinauenweg Karlsruhe-Kehl" does not exist. Only "Mannheim-Karlsruhe" and "Kehl-Whyl am Rhein" are designated. Both are marked with the symbol of the blue wave. We start at the end of the designated path "Rheinauenweg Mannheim-Karlsruhe" in Karlsruhe at "Rheinstrandbad Rappenwörth", S-Station "Daxlanden, Rappenwörth". Mainly, we can expect field and gravel routes but also paths. Surrounded by forest, the original landscape of the "Rheinauen" can still be well imagined. Along the dam, past lakes, and former old side arms of the Rhine, one can hardly see the wide tamed river flowing only a few hundred meters parallel to the path, but it remains present. When we leave the forest (Au am Rhein), we enter agricultural landscapes, interrupted by modern innovations such as cities and industrial facilities. Here the path only stays briefly. It leads us back and forth between the Rhine and forest. It traces its way past the Goldkanal to the Murgkanal. Along the banks of the Murg, past stone walls, we cross the NSG Rastatter Ried until we reach Plittersdorf. Here, the expectations of ornithologists are met.

Beautiful local tour in Middle Baden. Today Uschi came along. That's why I included sights: The Aalschocker Heini, and of course Baden Baden. In early summer, the rose garden in Beutig is the event in Baden Baden. The view and the splendor of the roses is simply magnificent. The climb with the bike is definitely worth it.

After the holidays, I just had to get back on the bike today. Indoor cycling is driving me crazy. Especially since continuous rain is forecast for tomorrow again. The headwind on the way on the Rhine dam was already fierce. But that's why I have a motor with me. The dam renovation project is now finished up to about 500 m in Illingen. It looks good, it is also very rideable, very fine compacted gravel was used as the surface. The dam defense path is designed the same way. The joy that almost everything is finished is great, but internally I have the following questions: Why was no asphalt chosen as the final surface at all? In Alsace and the Palatinate, in the rest of the Pamina region, all bike paths are paved with asphalt, and it is durable. In Middle Baden, compacted gravel is used. When the first timber transports from the floodplain forest are done, the dam will then have driving lanes. We also have clever personnel in our administrations who think they know everything better. In the Ried, I wished Heini (the eelpout in Wintersdorf) all the best for the new year. The foresters there have completely shaved off all the pollarded willows. Yes, they need it, and they grow back quickly anyway. I was quickly in the spa town of B. Baden over Iffezheim. As often before, I refreshed myself at Leopoldsplatz. I like going to Peter's good bakery. I have never been disappointed there. I rode backwards again via Balg, and then over the Eberbach to Haueneberstein and on to Schloss Favorit. In Kuppenheim I was able to catch a few sun rays again and therefore decided to add a detour via Rotenfels Winkel to Malsch. The tailwind blew me to Ettlingenweier and Bruchhausen. Through the Hardtwald, the hometown was reached relatively quickly. In the end, I am glad that today I was able to really feel the wind blowing around my nose again. That was really necessary again.

Great weather today, almost the entire team was present. Goal? Of course, Deutsches Weintor, Bernd Pfeffer's Schorle umbrella. An experience, with a wonderful finale at the Rhine ferry.
