To anyone who might be planning to do this route under the snow or winter conditions - it absolutely requires proper crampons and an ice axe, at some places I wished I had two ice tools with me. Alpine experience is mandatory. Even with proper equipment, there is still a danger of a deadly fall if the snow is bad enough. There is already a warning on the topo, but it’s not very specific, so here is just a little bit from our experience.  We did this climb as a relatively experienced group of four on 29.09.2024, with great visibility, very mild wind and temperatures forecasted to be about -5 to 5.  From the topo, other reports and photos on the internet we did not expect the unsecured parts to be so long and exposed and at some points they felt worse than any of the secured parts. The snow conditions were horrible and much worse than we guessed from webcams and reports, photos and videos from other years in November and December - very little firm firn and plenty of unstable powder.  We had to do at least several short, but very dangerous traverses over iced steep stones covered with a mere 15-20cm of soft powder. At some places, snow was almost thigh-deep and those felt safe and fun in comparison. Difficulties were mostly increasing up to the old Seilbahn station and by the time we realised snow conditions were just too bad it seemed even more dangerous to climb down, so please beware. Also, it’s the north-western side, so be sure to have enough warm clothing and tea if going in cold weather.

=============================== Good morning, I made the route on 08/23/2023: perfect, I made it in 5 hours. It is not difficult but long. It is possible to cut it in half by spending a night at the Wiener Neustädter Hütte. The route starts at the end of the car park and is indicated by a yellow sign. After 10/20' of climb, don't forget to turn left: there is no sign but the GPX track is perfect. Then you have to follow the path, 20' before the Wiener Neustädter Hütte, there are on the left buildings of an old cable station not marked on the map, there you have to continue the path to the right following the traces of paintings . 5'/10' later, a painted arrow indicates to go up to the right and you arrive at the Wiener Neustädter Hütte. You have to continue to follow the paint marks and the via ferra begins at the bottom of the scree under a large oblique crack. Indeed, it is not necessary to attach to the cables but nothing prevents to do it. After the approach walk and with fatigue, it is better to be careful.

Absolutely epic. HOWEVER - this is a 9-10 hour round trip including approach. Don’t let the app trick you into thinking 4-5 hours. That is impossible. The Klettersteig is absolutely beautiful, quite exposed and some tough sections. Awesome. If you can handle the cold then don’t miss out a swim in one of the lakes on the way down

Wunderschöne Tour in beeindruckender Kulisse.
