The many former individual volcanoes overlapped and therefore today form numerous basalt blankets layered on top of each other. The appearance resembles a large shield-shaped volcano with a central elevation. The natural landscape of the mountains is largely protected in the nature park and in the Geopark you can discover the volcanic rocks and special rock formations of the Vogelsberg.
In the middle is the completely forested Oberwald, but in the outer parts of the mountain there are also meadows and farmland, as well as large block heaps of basalt on the northern slope of the Taufstein. The Vogelsberg is known for its winter sports areas at the Herchenhainer Höhe and the Hoherodskopf. But hikers and cyclists also enjoy the mountains. The densely wooded Hoher Vogelsberg is surrounded by a park-like landscape, so that the hiking trails always offer sweeping views. Cyclists particularly enjoy cycling on old railway lines, where they can cycle comfortably with moderate gradients and on closed asphalt surfaces and enjoy nature. Examples are the Vulkanradweg, the Südbahnradweg or the Niddaroute along the river of the same name.
