Discover the region
The low mountain range stretches from Hörstel in the northwest in a southerly direction past Ibbenbüren and Osnabrück, through East Westphalia and through the Bielefeld urban area, over the district of Lippe to Horn-Bad Meinberg. Here you will find the transition to the Egge hills – at first glance you cannot tell where which mountain range begins and ends, until the 17th century the two areas were still combined as "Osning".
Together with the Wiehen hills, the Teutoburg Forest extends far into the North German Plain. In the southwest the mountains are bordered by the Westphalian Bay, in the east by the Lippe Mountains. The Teutoburg Forest reaches a height of 446 m with the Barnacken as the highest elevation. The longest rivers in the mountains are the Ems and Lippe, accompanied by numerous smaller rivers and streams. The three parallel ridges of the Teutoburg Forest are intersected by valleys.

Castles and Romans in the Teutoburg Forest
In earlier times, the Teutoburg Forest was hardly populated, but was dotted with castles. For this purpose, prominent mountain tops were often used, such as the Grotenburg, the Hünenburg near Bielefeld and the Tönsberg in Oerlinghausen or the Löwenburg in Lämershagen. The Ravensberg Castle and the Tecklenburg Castle are more reconstructed than original.
Besides the castles there are other sights in the Teutoburg Forest. Especially popular are the legacies of the Romans, which is why you can follow in their footsteps in the Roman camp Bielefeld-Sennestadt and in the Museum and Park Kalkriese. Those who follow the history of the Varus Battle should also visit the Hermann monument, which was erected in honor of the Cheruscan prince Arminius.
