Trip planning

Getting there

Public transport

From the railway station Interlaken Ost you can reach Wengen in 44 minutes. Take the blue and yellow train of the Berner Oberland Bahn (BOB) to Lauterbrunnen. Important: You sit in the front part of the train, as it splits in Zweilütschinen. If you take a seat at the back, you will make a detour to Grindelwald. In Lauterbrunnen you change to the yellow-green train of the Wengernalp Bahn (WAB). This takes you to Wengen in 12 minutes.

By far the hardest hike I’ve done to date, but every step was worth it. The trail is absolutely stunning, winding through alpine forests before opening up into breathtaking meadows. I’m so glad we brought our trekking poles for the descent. The final section is definitely not for the faint-hearted! Thankfully, there’s a cable to hold onto, but one misplaced step could get you into serious trouble. Don’t let that put you off, though. We simply took our time, looked out for each other, and made it down safely. The views at the top make every challenge along the way worthwhile.

Start early. The valley is warm and not much breeze and the initial walk is along pavement and road. Long, hard, steep uphill to finish. Can stop for a beer at cafe midway. Finish view is absolutely spectacular and worth it!

The magnificent walk. Easy and panoramic. I'd say this is the closest trail to the highest mountains in the region. A lot of nicely smelling field flowers, a smal turquoise lake, bench-spots to relax . A small museum worth attention too. We make the trail to the next train station. Highly recommended, thank you!
