The area around Engelberg in Switzerland is well developed and yet has remained unspoiled. Situated at an altitude of around 1000 m, the village with the Benedictine monastery founded in 1120 at its heart and a homely village center has retained its individual and rustic character. Framed by the glaciers of the Titlis (3,238 m) and Lake Lucerne, the region is characterized by refreshing nature and impressive mountain panoramas, making it the ideal starting point for numerous activities. Getting there

Public transport

National and international connections (from Zurich Airport connections every half hour with a journey time of approx. 1 hour) to Lucerne. Then take the Zentralbahn up to Engelberg in 43 minutes through a varied landscape and gorges.

Directions

By car, take the A2 (Basel-Gotthard) to Stans Süd, then follow the main road for 20 km to Engelberg. Engelberg is 30 minutes from Lucerne, 1 hour and 15 minutes from Basel, Zurich or Bern.

By plane

National and international connections to Zurich, Basel and Geneva. Rail connections from Zurich airport every half hour with a journey time of approx. 1 hour to Lucerne station. Then take the Zentralbahn up to Engelberg in 47 minutes through a varied landscape and gorges. The combination with the boat also has its charm: from Lucerne by sea to Stansstad or Buochs and from there by public bus and train to Engelberg.

    Technisch sehr wenig herausfordernd, höchstens der steile Schotterteil gegen Ende des Aufstiegs. Aber was euch oben erwartet entschädigt für den eher (Bike-Technisch) langweiligen Aufstieg auf breiten Wegen. Der See und die Umgebung mit den vielen Gipfeln und Gletschern ist wunderschön 🤩

    Ich habe die Wanderung heute in der umgekehrten Richtung gemacht, da ich lieber hoch statt runter gehe. Ich würde die Wanderung auch so empfehlen, da sie besonders gegen Ende des Abstiegs viel lockeres Gestein hat, dass das Ausrutschen stark begünstigt. Beim hoch gehen, ist dies ein kleineres Problem. Wenn man am Morgen startet, so sind alle Anstiege schön im kühlen Schatten. Die Aussicht ist herrlich und die Wege sind sehr abwechslungsreich. Oben angekommen, gibt es ein sehr gutes Restaurant (Qualität der Gerichte ist hervorragend). Dann mit der Bergbahn hinunter (auch ein Spektakel, hat man nach dem letzten Masten doch das Gefühl des freien Falls) und dann gemütlich mit dem Bus zurück nach Engelberg. Ich benötigte für die umgekehrte Strecke 3 Std. und bin recht gemütlich gegangen.
