Here lies the Danube Delta, as well as the Măcin Mountains: Tulcea county offers a visual and cultural spectacle from one end to the other. Most tourists arrive here mainly in the summer season, only for fishing and boat trips in the Danube Delta. But the hills here stay sunny for months on end, anticipating the delicious white wines, and the curious traveler finds here Greek and Roman ruins and a multiethnicity with South and Middle-Eastern influences that is impossible to ignore.

Discover the region
Tulcea county is often reduced to the Danube Delta as a tourist destination. But if you make travel plans through Tulcea in spring or autumn, you have every chance to discover this charming land with a Mediterranean climate in a more relaxed atmosphere. Thus, you will thoroughly enjoy the history of the ancient ruins scattered all over the territory, the tangy taste of white wines from the Niculițel winery, or the silent charm of the fishing villages on the banks of the Danube.
The old and the new in Tulcea county
Two forms of relief, diametrically opposed in terms of age, meet on this territory. On the one hand, the Măcinului Mountains. They are the oldest form of relief in Romania and are ideal for hiking, mountain biking, or horseback riding, but also for spotting turtles. On the other hand, the Danube Delta, the newest European territory. Tourists get to know it only superficially. It's only the locals who know more of its mysteries.
Tulcea stays bathed in sunshine for longer than many other areas in the country. That's why, whether you love the mountains or the sea, you can confidently choose Tulcea as a destination for a vacation outside the summer season, to enjoy a healthier tan and less crowded destinations.

Mountain landscapes in Tulcea
Tulcea isn't the first option when it comes to mountain hiking, but truth be told, holiday options are plenty around the towns of Greci or Măcin.
On a sunny day, you can cover the ridge of the Măcinului Mountains almost entirely. The Măcin Mountains National Park offers delightful, shorter, hiking trails as well, and even nature trails suitable for children or for those with less experience. The network of mountain bike trails spreads all over the protected area. There is no shortage of places to stop or picnic, or even a few good clearings to pitch a tent.
At the foot of the mountains, expect welcoming hosts, local white wines, and gastronomy with Turkish and Greek influences. In the town of Greci, you might also hear a special dialect: the Italian community here (formed around the 19th century, with the arrival of the first Italians working in the granite quarry) merged with the local one, resulting in a unique cultural landscape.
The Danube Delta
Listed among the most beautiful places to visit in Romania, due to its uniqueness, the Danube Delta is also one of the favorite destinations for more secluded holidays. The Delta entered the UNESCO heritage in 1991 as a wetland of international importance and a biosphere reserve. It was around this time that foreign tourists started to show interest in the place.
Boat trips are ubiquitous in the Delta, as are meals of fresh fish cooked in various ways. The roe salad prepared here is internationally famous. If you are lucky enough to have a good guide on the canals, you will learn many details about the flora and fauna of the area, as only locals can tell.
Wildlife photography tours or kayaking in the Danube Delta are among the best ways to get to know the area in depth if you are not living there. Rarely promoted, bike rides are less common, but not impossible.
Want to try something special? Visit the Delta in winter! Take a kayak tour in the winter and you will float smoothly on still unfrozen canals, you will spot birds that no longer avoid prying eyes and you will peer through the dry reeds whose green, lush foliage seems so thick in the summer.
A bike route that few know about, rarely talked about, but which is the easiest way to reach Sulina from Sf. Gheorghe by land, or vice versa.
Tulcea's hidden gems
The cultural diversity of the county holds a rich tourist potential. The important communities of Lipovian Russians, Turks, Tatars, Aromanians (Macedonians), Ukrainians, and Italians have left their mark on architectural, linguistic, and gastronomic levels. Try to capture these peculiarities in local museums, mosques, or the streets of smaller towns such as Babadag, Slava Rusă, Slava Chercheză.
Sulina, a former free port and a melting pot of European cultures since before the idea of the European Union existed, still fascinates with urban legends of forlorn sailors and pirates, and a multi-ethnic cemetery full of romantic stories. Little has remained of the former prosperous town, but the Sulina beach has finer sand than most beaches in the classic Black Sea resorts.
The fishing village of Sfântu Gheorghe comes alive every year in August, during the Anonimul Independent Film Festival. In addition to pleasant nights spent in front of a giant screen, here you will find an intimate atmosphere, a clean beach, and a lot of peacefulness.
