Măcin Mountains National Park

The Măcin Mountains stand out due to some interesting features: they are the lowest mountain range in Romania, they aren't part of the Carpathians, they offer a unique landscape thanks to the steppe vegetation, and they're extremely rich in bioversity. The routes in the Măcin Mountains are suitable for hiking, but also for cycling or horse riding. Spring is the perfect season to visit the Macin Mountains - to admire white and red poppy fields, but also to observe the turtles that live here.

A visit to Macin Mountains is a must if you love traveling. You might be surprised, though, to see that these mountains look rather like a hill; their highest summit is Țuțuiatu / Greci Peak (467m). However, hiking across the entire range isn't easy. The almost barren hills, with little shading or sheltering options, are truly challenging; in case of extreme heat, frost, or strong winds, you are extremely exposed.

The Macin Mountains stand on the Via Pontica migration corridor so that roughly 30,000 birds fly over the region annually, during the migrating season; 29 species are birds of prey, the highest number in Europe. If birdwatching isn't your thing, you might like reptiles. Here you will find the blotched snake - the largest snake in Romania.

Several species of specific flora and fauna in these mountains are specific to a steppe relief; among them, the local peony (Paeonia peregrina Mill. var. romanica) or the endemic endangered flower Campanula romanica, the horned viper, the Aesculapian snake, or numerous species of snails and butterflies.

The Măcin Mountains National Park includes the Pădurea Fagilor nature reserve in Luncavița and the M[cin - Niculitel avifauna protection area.

Once here, you can choose between the 10 marked routes, among them some easy nature trails, marked cycling routes, and an equestrian route that starts from Cerna Paddock.

We strongly recommend trekking with a local guide, to find out more about how these mountains got their current aspect and the peculiarities of the area. The most spectacular route is probably the Pricopanului Trail; here you can see many unique granite formations, including the Dobrogean Sphinx.
