Discover the region
The Odenwald is separated from the Upper Rhine Plain in the west by a straight line of break-off. The steep mountain flanks here rise impressively several hundred meters into the air. In the north, however, the border becomes blurred and is mostly oriented north of the woodland. In the east, the mountains are separated from the Spessart by the Main valley, and in the south the building land joins them.
In the course of time, geological processes created numerous minerals and ores, which were mined in the Odenwald for a long time: Marble, porphyry, silver, lead, copper, iron and manganese. This epoch can be relived in three visitor mines.

Natural highlights in the Odenwald
In the Odenwald you will find some natural highlights that you should not miss. The "Sea of Rocks" near Reichenbach was already used as a quarry by the Romans. It is a large accumulation of boulders that provide material for a giant saga.
Especially impressive is the Eberstadt stalactite cave, one of the most important in southern Germany. Discovered by chance and prepared for visitors by the locals, the cave offers a great insight into the history of the earth and the incredible beauty of the untouched nature.
On foot you can explore the realm of water in the Margaret Gorge or on the crystal nature trail around the Katzenbuckel, the highest mountain in the Odenwald, the volcanic developments in the mountains. A romantic fairy tale path runs through the Obrunn Gorge and a short fixed rope route has been installed in the quarry near Hainstadt.
Hiking Area Odenwald
The Odenwald is a hiking region. 10,000 km of paths run through the forested mountains. A popular trail is the Nibelungensteig, a 130 km long long-distance hiking trail that follows the tracks of the famous German legend. The quality hiking trails Burgensteig Bergstrasse and Neckarsteig lead over 120 km each to castles, palaces and castle ruins. The Margaret Gorge and medieval towns are also along the way.
The Alemannenweg and the Limes hiking trail take us back in time. On 144 km, the former leads us as a predicate hiking trail and large circular route along the Hessian Bergstrasse and the latter runs along the former border fortification of the Romans in the Odenwald.
