Liguria is a coastal region in northwestern Italy. A narrow strip of land between the sea and the mountains, it is also known as the “Italian Riviera”. Liguria is a travel and vacation destination for people from all over the world, thanks in part to its large variety of outdoor activities. It offers a varied and versatile experience even in autumn: small villages overlooking the sea, ancient cities that were once queens of the Mediterranean; the tranquility of the hinterland; sports, culture, and outdoor experiences in the Alps and Apennines along Alta Via dei Monti Liguri.

Alta Via dei Monti Liguri: The High Route of the Ligurian Mountains
Paths and mule tracks that connect the two ends of the Ligurian Riviera, from east to west or west to east. A journey between coast and hinterland, between Alps and Apennines, between sea and sky: this is theAlta Via dei Monti Liguri.
Step by step you will fall more and more in love with this land; even in autumn, when the days get shorter and the air gets crisp, the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri turns out to be an excellent alternative for walkers who do not yet want to lock their boots in the closet. In fact, the proximity to the sea and the protection of the Maritime Alps and the Apennines ensure perfect temperatures even when the leaves begin to turn yellow.
The red-white-red trail marker with the initials AV identifies a unique route from Riviera to Riviera, from which it is possible to admire Corsica and Gorgona, Monviso and the Monte Rosa Massif at the same time.
43 stages in nature
422 km from the Maritime Alps to the Apennines, a trek along the entire length of Liguria, from Ventimiglia to Ceparana (or vice versa), on foot or by bike to discover the Liguria you don't expect.
The Alta Via dei Monti Liguri runs the entire length of the region, crossing all four provinces (from west to east: Imperia, Savona, Genoa and La Spezia) for a total of no less than 43 stages.
Thanks to the gentle influence of the Ligurian Sea, the Alta Via is a viable route year-round. However, this should not be misleading: it is still an elevated route that reaches over 2,000 m near Mount Saccarello, the border point between Liguria, Piedmont and France.
The start and finish of this great Ligurian adventure, however, is inevitably the sea: regardless of the direction in which one wishes to travel the Alta Via, greeting the hikers on arrival will be either the waves of the Riviera di Ponente in Ventimiglia or Ceparana, a stone's throw from the gentle waters of La Spezia.
One, two or three days along the Alta Via
If you only think of Liguria as beach holiday destination, you will quickly change your mind as you travel this extremely varied and diverse itinerary; walking the entire 400-plus kilometers are certainly a feat for few, but the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri can also be enjoyed "in small bites," covering only two or three stages or limiting yourself to daily outings, which are shorter but just as rewarding in terms of scenery, and more.
Ideas for two or more days on the High Way of the Ligurian Mountains
Are you looking for an autumn backpacking weekend away from the classic routes? Why not discover the Beigua Park, combining three stages of the Alta Via straddling the provinces of Savona and Genoa. Or skim the French border by starting in Ventimiglia and heading into the Ligurian Alps. And if two days are not enough–why not try four or even 10 days? Fill your water bottle, lace up your shoes and go!

Another option is an outing among the tall beech trees of the Barbottina Forest, in the mountains above Finale Ligure.
