Mesogeia: the midland of Attica
Mesogeia, the region around Athens International Airport, is traditionally the vineyard-dominated hinterland east of Hymettos, known for its resinous white wine Retsina. The region offers many local settlements and a winding coastline of varying character that extends to Laurio, a mining town famous since ancient times for its silver, and Sounio, the tip of the peninsula, where, right on the sea, stands an impressive Poseidon -Temple from the 5th century BC.
