Thonhausen

Thonhausen is located about 10 km southwest of Altenburg on the edge of the "Leinawald" nature park. The region is known for its picturesque landscapes with rolling hills, meadows and forests. Here you will find peace and quiet away from the big tourist crowds.

The most important sights are the 16th century Ponitz Castle with its romantic park and the 17th century Wendelstein moated castle. Another highlight is the Posterstein Castle Museum, which houses an extensive collection of medieval works of art.

Culturally, Thonhausen offers some interesting events, such as the annual Christmas market or the traditional Easter bonfire on the village square. Music lovers also get their money's worth here: In summer, an open-air concert takes place.

For gourmets, the region also has a lot to offer: Be sure to try the famous "Altenburger goat cheese" or visit one of the cosy restaurants in the area.

When it comes to outdoor activities, hiking and cycling tours through the charming landscape can be undertaken. Hikes are particularly beautiful in autumn, when the leaves change colour and the forest is bathed in golden light. In winter you can go skiing on the nearby slopes or take a romantic horse-drawn sleigh ride through the snow.

And what to do in bad weather? A visit to the "Solewelt Altenburg" leisure pool is always a good choice for a rainy day.
