The forest in the green southwest of Germany
Overall, around a third of Saarland is covered by forest. This abundance of forest makes the federal state a natural oasis far away from large metropolitan areas.
Saarland's mixed forest with its high proportion of beech trees also stands for a varied forest landscape. With 36 different deciduous tree species and 16 different coniferous tree species, the entire range of tree species is a treasure trove of biodiversity.
More than 90 % of the 70 or so premium hiking trails in Saarland cross or accompany these forest areas. But the forest also offers extensive active and recreational areas for touring cyclists, mountain bikers and all other outdoor enthusiasts.
National Natural Landscapes in Saarland
The UNESCO Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve stretches across large parts of southern Saarland and is a refuge for rare and native animal and plant species.
In the north of the state, the amazing natural spectacle of the Saarschleife in the middle of the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park is impressive. The Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park in the north-east is also known as the primeval forest of tomorrow due to its particularly dense forests.

Sustainable vacation in the Saarland
Did you know? Saarland was the first federal state in Germany to be recognized as a "sustainable travel destination".
