Discover the region
The tranquil river that gives the valley its name runs through the valley, connecting the three federal states of North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate and delighting canoeists and water lovers alike.
Paddling in the Lahn Valley - on the water through nature
The Lahn is one of the most romantic and water sports-friendly rivers in Germany. With its 160 "paddleable" kilometers, it delights enthusiastic canoeists. Specially designated entry and exit points for water sports make the tour an eco-friendly canoeing experience.
Kayakers also follow the river through unspoiled natural landscapes, past cultural and historical sights. Wakeboarders and water skiers use the picturesque backdrop to really let off steam on the water.
Those who prefer a more leisurely pace can take a boat or ferry from one hotspot to the next or take a dip in one of the many lakes. Even more relaxation and wellness await in Germany's first river sauna at the Emser Therme or in the Backhaus sauna at the Lahn-Dill-Bergland-Therme. Guests at the AROMA Lahn Beach in Marburg can stretch their feet in the sand and unwind.
On the road by bike or in hiking boots
Nature and culture lovers can enjoy a pleasurable cycling experience on the Lahn Valley Cycle Path. The 245-kilometre route leads from the source of the Lahn via the romantic villages of the Lahn Valley to where it flows into the Rhine. The boat tunnels and locks of the old residential town of Weilburg are a particular highlight of the route. Impressive day trips include the Southern Westerwald Cycle Route or the Dill Valley Cycle Route. Clear roads without hectic traffic await you on car-free Sundays.
Those who prefer hiking boots to bikes will also be delighted in the Lahntal. Hunt for stamps along the 19 stages of the Lahnwanderweg hiking trail. Whether through the fairytale atmosphere of the Rothaargebirge mountains, the lush green Lahn floodplains or the rugged Ruppertsklamm gorge, variety is guaranteed along the 290 kilometers. Hard-working hikers receive the Lahnwanderweg hiking certificate for three or more stages.
Other hiking highlights such as the Rimberg Tower, which impresses with its 360-degree panoramic view over the Lahn-Dill-Bergland, the history-steeped Bickener Ritterspuren extra tour or the Lahn-Dill-Bergland-Pfad make the Lahntal a popular outdoor destination.
A valley full of stories and cultural treasures
Warfare and conflicts over influence andpossession are the stuff successful movies are made of. In the Lahn Valley, both the medieval castle ruins and palaces, as well as the unique underground defense systems in Dillenburg, bear impressive witness to former rivalries and take us on a journey through the past.
The Römerquelle has its own story to tell. Once used by the Romans for bathing or as a drinking water source, it is now a popular excursion destination and the ideal place to refill your water bottle on tour.
Well-maintained gastronomy and discoverable highlights await in the picturesque half-timbered houses of the romantic towns in the Lahn Valley. Those who long for some peace and quiet after the bustling activity can enjoy the tranquil flora in Gail'sche Park in Rodheim.
