Geographically, Gillenfeld lies on the edge of the Volcanic Eifel Nature Park and is surrounded by breathtaking scenery. The region is known for its extinct volcanic cones as well as numerous maars - volcanic crater lakes - which were once formed by eruptions.

Touristically relevant are especially the three maars: the Meerfelder Maar, the Gemündener Maar and the Weinfelder Maar. These lakes offer a variety of outdoor activities such as hiking, swimming or boating and are worth a visit at any time of year. In summer, you can cool off on the water or enjoy the view of the glittering water surface; in autumn, the surroundings transform into a colourful natural spectacle; in winter, you can sled across frozen lakes or go cross-country skiing; spring, in turn, brings a colourful splendour of blossoms.

In addition to the Maars, there are also cultural highlights such as historical buildings like the Kasselburg (a castle ruin) or the Mosenberg Tower (an observation tower). Various museums such as the Eifel Bell Foundry Museum are also worth a visit.

Culinary Gillenfeld also has a lot to offer: Be sure to try local specialities such as Döppekooche (potato casserole), Himmel un Ääd (heavenly potatoes with apple sauce) or Rievkooche (potato pancakes). To go with this, we recommend a refreshing beer from the local brewery.

In case it should rain, there are also indoor activities: Visit one of the numerous wellness facilities, for example, or take a trip to the nearby city of Trier - known for its Roman ruins and museums.

Where is the most beautiful? It's hard to say, because every season has its own charm. In summer, the Meerfelder Maar is particularly beautiful; in autumn, a walk through the colourful forests around the Weinfelder Maar is worthwhile; in winter, the Mosenberg Tower offers a spectacular view of the snow-covered landscape and in spring, wildflowers bloom everywhere.

Gillenfeld is definitely worth a visit and this travel guide is designed to help you make the most of your time here. Have fun discovering!
