Geographically, Eßweiler, Kusel is picturesquely situated at the foot of the Palatinate Forest and is surrounded by green hills and forests. The area is characterised by its diverse landscape with numerous hiking trails suitable for both beginners and experienced hikers.

One of the highlights of this region is undoubtedly Lichtenberg Castle. Germany's largest castle ruin offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding area and houses a museum as well as a falconry. The nearby Bosselstein Castle is also definitely worth a look.

    Tolle Wanderung, sehr gut ausgeschildert, viele Rastplätze und verschiedene Einkehrmöglichkeiten. Die Aussichten. die immer wieder geboten werden, sind kaum zu übertreffen. Da es außerdem gute Anbindungen an Bus und Bahn gibt, ist diese Mehrtageswanderung ein absolutes Highlight.

    Wir sind als Wandergruppe von 10 Personen die Etappen von Dannenfels zum Bastenhaus, vom Bastenhaus nach Rockenhausen und von Rockenhausen nach Obermoschel gewandert. Über den höchsten Berg der Pfalz, das höchstgelegene Dorf und die kleinste Stadt der Pfalz ist es ein Weg der Superlative. Die gut ausgeschilderte Wegführung, seltener sind es Pfade, durch Wälder und offene Kulturlandschaft mit tollen Ausblicken in das weite Donnersberger Land haben uns begeistert. In den Etappenzielen gibt es schöne Unterkünfte und auf dem Weg auch Einkehrmöglichkeiten, wobei die Hütten oftmals nur am Wochenende geöffnet haben. Der noch nicht überlaufen Pfälzer Höhenweg ermöglicht ein ruhiges Eintauchen in die Natur und hat uns sehr gut gefallen.

    Was für eine großartige Landschaft! Bei dem ständigen Auf und Ab durch die Alte Welt bieten sich auf jeder Anhöhe neue Ausblicke in eine Region, die keinen Vergleich mit etablierten Urlaubszielen scheuen muss. Und ein besonderer Genuss ist es, dies auf dem Motorrad zu erleben. Dabei ist man selbst an einem schönen Sommer-Sonntag fast alleine unterwegs. Oft haben wir Motorradtouren schon als Stress empfunden, aber bei dem sanften Gleiten durch die Täler und über die exponierten Höhenzüge der Alten Welt entspannen wir - fast schon meditativ. Besondere Höhepunkte für uns Biker? Auf jeden Fall das Motorradmuseum in Otterbach, wo in einer ehemaligen Kirche auf zwei Ebenen Old- und Youngtimer präsentiert werden. Und dann die vielen Einkehrmöglichkeiten. Geheimtipp: Die Gartenwirtschaft auf dem Felsberger Hof mit ihrer Blütenpracht (leider nur sonntags im Sommer geöffnet). Aber nicht weitersagen!

    Bin die Etappe, von Wolfstein aus gelaufen. Ist mir schon ein bisschen "schleierhaft" warum gerade diese Zuwegung zur Jugendherberge gewählt wurde. Und überhaupt, die ersten 4,8km waren wirklich nicht "Premium." Schotter und Asphalt sind halt nicht so toll. (Im Höhenprofil ist das nicht richtig dargestellt!) Erst danach gab es zum ersten mal Laub unter die Sohlen. Die Anstiege bis zur Selberghütte sind schon knackig. Oben angekommen kann man vom Aussichtsturm leider keinen 360 Grad rundblick mehr haben, denn einiges an Bäumen ist doch sehr hoch gewachsen. Diese und auch die zuvor schon passierte PWV Hütte Rutsweiler sind lt. Anschlag nur Sonntags geöffnet. Aber beide strahlen "Gemütlichkeit" aus und anhand der Preistafel ist´s auch noch günstig obendrein. Dann aber kann der Abschnitt voll überzeugen. Zwar gehts teilweise recht steil bergab, aber die Wegeführung ist nun viel besser, da Waldwege und Pfade vorherrschen. So kommt man an den beiden Ruinen Neu- und Altwolfstein vorbei und hat tolle Aussichten aufs kleine Städtchen Wolfstein und somit auch auf den Startpunkt der Luftlinie nicht sehr weit entfernt ist. Auf schönen Wegen gehts durch den Wald und auch wieder aufwärts. Über die Höhen mit schönen Aussichten und etlichen Getreidefeldern passiert man auch noch eine "Weihnachtsbaumplantage" sowohl rechts und links des Weges. Das sind wohl einige tausend. Danach in Richtung Lohnweiler ist´s vorbei mit Pfaden und Wald man geht über Schotter und ein kleines Wiesenstück durchs Dorf und dort an der Bahnlinie entlang die restliche Strecke auf ebenem Grund nach Lauterecken. Dort gibt es einiges zu sehen und auch Einkehrmöglichkeiten. Ich bin dann mit dem Zug die kurze Strecke zurück (Fahrpreis 2,-€) nach Wolfstein. Fazit: gute Beschilderung und doch einige Wanderhighlights auf recht anspruchsvoller Strecke was die Höhenmeter betrifft. Genügend Rastmöglichkeiten, davon einige Überdacht. Mir persönlich gefallen die langen Schotter und Asphaltpassagen weniger und ich mag eben mehr den Wald. Diese Etappe hat von beidem einiges und somit vergebe ich gerade noch den 4. Stern.
