Geographically, Beckingen is located on the edge of the Saarland and borders on France. The hilly landscape with green meadows, deep forests and picturesque rivers is a true paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. But the region also has a lot to offer in terms of culture.

The tourist attractions include Fellenberg Castle from the 18th century and the historic market square in Merzig with its charming half-timbered houses. The Dagstuhl Castle Museum or the Roman excavations in Nennig are also worth a visit.

For those interested in culture, there are numerous highlights every year, such as the International Jazz Festival in St. Wendel or the medieval spectacle at Montclair Castle.

The region also has a lot to offer in terms of cuisine: Be sure to try the Saarland speciality "Dibbelabbes" (a potato pancake dish) or enjoy a glass of wine directly from the vintner at a wine tasting along the Saar.

The best seasons for outdoor activities are spring and summer, when hikes through the flowering landscapes are particularly beautiful. In autumn, the colourful deciduous forest is particularly enticing, and in winter there are opportunities for skiing in the nearby mountains.

If it ever rains, there are also indoor activities such as a visit to the Merzig adventure pool or a guided tour of the Völklingen Ironworks - a former ironworks that is now a World Heritage Site.

Of course, it is always most beautiful where you like to spend time yourself. However, walks along the Saar and a visit to the Garden of the Senses in Merzig-Wadern with its fragrant flowerbeds and artistic water features are particularly recommended.

In total, Beckingen, Merzig-Wadern offers something for everyone: nature enthusiasts get their money's worth just as much as those interested in culture or gourmets. A destination that definitely deserves a place on your bucket list!

A lively woodland walk with varied paths, our two dogs loved it. Keeping dogs on the lead is recommended for dogs with a strong hunting instinct out of respect for the flora and fauna. One thing needs to be mentioned that walkers need to be aware of. At one point the wooden bridge across the stream is no longer there. I’m assuming there was one there, as the remains lay by the side of the path approaching the stream. Therefore at on point we had to cross a shallow stream, no problem for the dogs but recommend waterproof hiking boots, otherwise feet will get very wet. I’ve added this now to the route.
