Escapades "nature" au cœur des massifs varois
Did you know that the Var department is the 2nd most wooded department in France? From west to east and north to south, the region abounds with footpaths and trails to explore on foot, by bike or on a trail, as well as roads and passes.
Covering more than 50,000 hectares, the Sainte-Baume massif stands out in the Var landscape with its white limestone rock. The Sainte-Baume is known for its sacred, thousand-year-old forest. The presence of the grotto of Mary Magdalene, where the Saint is said to have stayed, is one of the must-see places of pilgrimage.
Between Hyères and Fréjus, the Maures massif and its national nature reserve is one of the largest in the Var (135,000 hectares). It offers numerous opportunities for walks and outings, with beautiful views over the Var coastline and the Maures plain.
On the natural border with the Alpes-Maritimes, the Estérel massif (32,000 hectares), the most easterly, is undoubtedly the most emblematic of the Var, with its famous Corniche de l'Estérel. It's also the most recognisable massif, with its red rock contrasting marvellously with the Grande Bleue!
Quand et où profiter du mimosa dans le Var ?
A veritable "yellow gold", the mimosa with its yellow pompons lights up the Var region during its flowering season, between January and March. This emblematic flower of south-east France perfumes the hillside paths of the Var at the start of the year, heralding the imminent arrival of spring.
Mimosa forests can be found in the Var mountain ranges, such as the Tanneron, which covers 200 hectares and is both cultivated and wild. With the red rocks of the Estérel, the blue waters of the Mediterranean and the invigorating yellow of the mimosa, the landscapes of the Var are magnificent to contemplate and photograph in winter. Whether you're hiking, trail-riding or mountain-biking, there's plenty to see and do!
If you're a road cyclist, why not take the Route du Mimosa? In the Var, this 108km route takes you from Bormes-les-Mimosas to Mandelieu-la-Napoule, via Saint-Raphaël. If you're feeling more sporty, you can go as far as Grasse, the world capital of perfume.
