Vaasa region

The Vaasa region surrounds the Finnish city of the same name on the Gulf of Bothnia on the west coast of Finnland. It is mainly characterized by the Kvarken Archipelago, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On the numerous small islands, but also on the mainland, you can discover the bilingual Finnish-Swedish culture that Vaasa, founded by the Swedish king in 1606, has preserved to this day.

The municipalities of Vaasa

The region directly on the west coast of Finland is very easy to reach. Whether by train, ferry or plane – Vaasa is well connected which makes it an ideal holiday destination. The region is divided into eight municipalities, all of which are unique and are held together by their proximity to the sea and Finnish-Swedish culture. In Korsholm you will find Finland's longest bridge, which leads directly into the Kvarken Archipelago. Korsnäs is the westernmost municipality in Finland, and Laihia is known for the jokes about its stingy inhabitants. In Malax, you can experience the authentic life in the archipelago and in Närpes you can enjoy the special tomatoes - known as the „red gold.“ For a historical experience, you can go to Isokyrö and for a sport or cultural experience to Vörå. Lastly, Vaasa also offers a wide range of cultural events and additionally, nature and the sea are also not far away.

The Kvarken Archipelago

The Kvarken Archipelago is probably the biggest highlight of the Vaasa region. Off the coast, the World Heritage Site with its islands, islets, and rocks spreads out – sometimes friendly, sometimes rough – and attracts numerous visitors and locals to its waters. The Raippaluoto bridge takes you into the unique world of the archipelago with its dreamy villages, educational nature trails, and towering lighthouses. The Kvarken Archipelago is the only Finnish landscape that has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The uniqueness of the area is obvious: Due to land uplift (0.8 cm per year), the rocky island region changes continuously, and the land area grows by one square kilometer every year – equivalent to about 150 soccer fields.

Some of the most beautiful places in the Kvarken Archipelago can only be reached by kayak, canoe or SUP board, so the journey alone is an adventure itself. Complete peace and solitude are available on the small islands and skerries in the Bothnian Sea. The islands are very different, but what unites them is their breathtaking nature. In Svedjehamn you will find rows of red boathouses, while Sommarö is mainly reminiscent of the historical station of the defense forces. In Klobbskat the archipelago's landscape changes from lush green forests to barren rocky landscapes and the Tankar lighthouse marks the end of the Kokkola archipelago. The outer archipelago stands out with its contrasting nature: smooth rocks, rough rocky bottoms, lush forests, and idyllic bays.

Culture and excursions in Vaasa

Not only convinces the Vaasa region with its stunning nature but also with its special cultural offers. Numerous theaters present a varied program in Finnish, Swedish and English. Many congresses and conferences are held in this university town. Museums and festivals attract people interested in culture. Also, the famous Finnish series "Stromsö" is set in a villa with beaches in Vaasa. The ice hole swimming is a very healthy and popular activity in this region. You can take a dip almost in the city center of Vaasa and in the spa and waterpark Tropiclandia in Vaskiluoto, a small island just outside the city.

Kiva ilta aurinko laavu missä siisti vessa on plussaa
