Discover the region
The Elm, which reaches 323 m at its highest peak, consists mainly of limestone in which precipitation seeps away immediately. Accordingly, the mountain range is poor in springs. Forestry use and several landscape and nature conservation areas exist right next to each other in the Elm. The Elm-Lappwald Nature Park includes the Elm and the Lappwald and Dorm mountain ranges.
Spectacular finds from the Palaeolithic Age testify to a long history of settlement in the low mountain range and can be admired today in the research museum in Schöningen. This was followed by the Middle Ages with several castles and then the zonal border during the division of Germany. In addition to the historical events, visitors can explore the idyllic nature of the low mountain range. 600 km of hiking trails and well-signposted cycle paths invite you to a relaxing stay in the forests.
