Căpăţâna-hegység

A mountain region less promoted and explored by traditional tourism, the Căpățănii Mountains display a couple of particularly beautiful massifs, popular among heavy trails hikers, mountain bikers embarking on unforgettable adventures or tireless climbers. The Căpățânii Mountains include the forests on the left bank of the Olt Valley (part of the Cozia National Park), the Buila-Vânturarița National Park, but also parts of the Latoriței or Lotru Mountains.

Maps and trails

Once you reach the base of the Căpățânii Mountains there are numerous activities to choose from, given the surface and the numerous mountain groups that make up these mountains. From the classic hikes to waterfalls, gorges, or more or less high peaks, to mountain biking trails, off-road tracks, or even climbing sectors - the Căpățânii Mountains are suitable for active travelers and adventurers willing to explore wilder landscapes.

Apart from the trails in Buila-Vânturarița, the rest of the mountainous area is dominated by deep, dark forests or paths trodden mostly by shepherds and wood loggers, remaining unknown to most travelers.

If you arrive in the Căpățânii Mountains in spring or summer, you find nature reborn or in full swing and you have all the chances to meet flocks of sheep with their shepherd close by and take shelter in makeshift huts. Autumn colors the hills in shades of copper, much to the delight of photographers. And in winter, although access is more difficult, the western half of the Căpățânii Mountains is perfect for cross-country skiing.

Longer walking or hiking routes might be accompanied by a few days of relaxation in the resorts on the Olt Valley, a cure with mineral waters or one with ionized air in the localities at the base of the mountain, which can also benefit families with children.
