The main distinctive element in the Buila - Vânturarița National Park is the homonymous limestone massif that stretches westwards. As in the case of other limestone mountain formations in Romania, this one also shows imposing rocky walls, sharp peaks, cliffs, caves, gorges, but also large meadows.
The ridge has a total length of about 14 kilometers and can be covered by experienced mountaineers in two days - this being one of the recommended experiences here. Although the distances are small, the considerable level difference and the rugged relief make the ascent more difficult.
The flora and fauna of the national park are typical of the Southern Carpathians. Due to the tiered arrangement, the flora has multiple habitats in which some rare species grow: the lady's slipper orchid, the Campanula alpina, or the Ligularia.
Hikers have few accommodation options in Buila - Vânturarița. There is a mountain hut, a sheepfold and a gazebo. Of course, there are also accommodation options in the localities at the base of the mountain. For those who prefer camping, the plateau next to the sheepfold below the Buila peak is the classic place.
Also, taking into account the rugged terrain and the wildness of this mountain, hiking is the only option for outdoor activity. For those who stay at the base of the limestone massif, walking on the path that connects the Pătrunsa and Pahomie hermitages is relaxing enough. In the northeastern part, spectacular gorges open up on the Cheia Valley, leading to the Cheia hut. On the opposite side, tourists can visit the Bears Cave, the Bat Cave, or Bistrița Gorges.
