The distinction between the Bavarian Forest and the Bohemian Forest can sometimes lead to confusion. Geologically speaking, there are no differences and the entire mountain range on Czech, German and Austrian soil is called the Bohemian Forest. In everyday use, however, a distinction is then made between the Bavarian Forest in Germany and the Bohemian Forest in Austria and the Czech Republic, in the latter also called Šumava.
In the Bavarian Forest, the National Park and the Nature Park are particularly worth seeing. Together with the Šumava National Park in the Czech Republic, the Bavarian Forest National Park forms one of the largest protected areas in Europe and the largest contiguous forest area in Central Europe. The area is also known as primeval forest, where the forest is almost left to itself and is characterised by small lakes and rain bogs. There are also some special areas with ravine forests or raised bogs. In the national park many rare animals could be preserved or newly settled like lynxes, European wildcat or otters.
