The classic Schachten route is usually walked clockwise, whereas the route described here is counterclockwise, which has the advantage that you do not have to tackle the steep climb at the beginning of the route right away; instead, you can first walk comfortably along the drinking water reservoir and the following ascent is also not so steep.
Author’s recommendation
Bring a snack and enough drinks, as there are no refreshment options on the route.
Alternative routes:
Contrary to the track, you can also walk along the left side of the lake, where at the back end of the drinking water reservoir you will rejoin the route.
At Lindberger Schachten, you can skip the detour via the viewpoint and the service hut and follow the signs "Buchenau," where the routes meet again at the forest road.
Walking clockwise is, of course, always possible.

Route:
Buchenau, drinking water reservoir, Verlorener Schachten, Almschachten Hochschachten, Latschensee, Latschenfilz, Kohlschachten, Zwiesler Filz, Hirschbachschwelle, Lindbergerschachten, Buchenau.
Description:
Past the inn "Latschensee" the route initially goes to the Frauenau drinking water reservoir.
Upon arrival, we cross the dam crest to reach the opposite side on the right side of the lake via hiking trail no. 9 along the drinking water reservoir.
From here the path starts to get a bit steeper until we reach the first stage destination, the Verlorener Schachten. It is worth taking the first short break at the hut here before continuing to hike without much up and down across the plateau towards Almschachten and finally reaching Hochschachten.
On the further route on well-passable boardwalks, we come to the junction to Latschensee, which we should definitely also visit.
Boardwalks continue through the Latschenfilz, where we are surrounded by knee-high mountain pines (dwarf pines) and after a short time you reach Kohlschachten.
The further route leads through the Zwiesler Filz, a raised bog where smaller moor lakes repeatedly appear on both sides of the trail and surrounded by mountain pines, creating an unusual impression for the hiker.
At the end of the bog, you reach the Hirschbachschwelle, where another larger moor lake awaits before continuing on a normal forest road and shortly afterwards turning right into the forest to reach Lindbergerschachten.
Arriving at Lindbergerschachten, we leave the normal route and first go uphill towards the viewpoint "Rachelblick" to then pass the service hut at the upper end of the Schachten and continue on the Goldsteig.
When reaching a forest road, go left downhill again before shortly thereafter joining the normal route coming from Lindberger Schachten.
Now it is only a slight downhill slope until you soon arrive back at the starting point in Buchenau at the inn "Latschensee".
