South pulsating yet alpine: the Wörthersee-Rosental region

In the hilly landscape of the tri-border area of Austria, Italy, and Slovenia lies the Wörthersee-Rosental region. Shielded by the northern Alps, the southwest weather conditions provide a pleasant, almost Mediterranean climate. Here you can enjoy wonderful Dolce Vita vibes in every season.

Leave behind the hustle and bustle and routine of everyday life – at Wörthersee this is possible from sunrise to sunset: a swim or water skiing session early in the morning, pleasure hiking on the Wörthersee circular trail up to the world's highest wooden observation tower at Pyramidenkogel, numerous events, holiday vibes at the beach club directly on the lake, and also sights for the whole family.

The idyllic alpine landscape of the Rosental in the heart of the Karawanks offers impressive nature experiences such as the Drau paddle trail, regional cuisine, and varied family leisure fun like a visit to the Pyramidenkogel observation tower.

Especially at the awakening of spring, when the days get longer and warmer, the region is ideal to enjoy its advantages. With the beginning of spring, you can experience Wörthersee from another perspective again: from the water! The season for boat cruises starts: on a tour with the ship, you can enjoy the first sunny days. Many other sights such as the miniature world Minimundus in Klagenfurt also reopen in spring.

Hiking around Lake Wörthersee

When hiking, you will find the Slow Down after the High Life here. At Lake Wörthersee, you come to rest, sinking into the cozy, pleasant rhythm of walking – just right for those who want to experience more than a stroll but do not want to climb high alpine paths.

Here, varied hiking trails lead you over sun-drenched lakeside promenades, through green forests, across moors, and a gentle hilly landscape – the return home is by boat.

Those who love it higher and more challenging can visit the idyllic-alpine Rosental with the impressive Karawanks. Both leisure hikers and sports-ambitious hikers will find their joy on the hiking trail network of around 400 kilometers. So pack your backpack, lace up your hiking boots, and discover the Dolce Vita side of hiking.

Fancy going a bit further? For those who prefer to be on the move for not just a few hours but several days, the region around Lake Wörthersee has a special treat in store: long-distance hiking trails.

Especially the Lake Wörthersee Circular Trail offers a breathtakingly beautiful and varied landscape, guiding you around the picturesque lake in four daily stages over 55 kilometers and 1,400 meters of elevation gain. The Pirkerkogel, Hohe Gloriette, Zillhöhe and Trattnigteich in particular invite you to linger – and a detour to the Pyramidenkogel is an absolute must.

On the Southern Alps Panorama Trail you discover the sunny sides of long-distance hiking on 280 kilometers and 17,700 meters of elevation gain. You hike through the mystical Karawanks in Rosental, get inspired by the deep blue Meerauge in the fairytale-like Bodental, and find strength in the view from majestic mountain peaks.

Taking the soul for a walk – Slow Trails

If you enjoy hiking combined with other activities, you'll get your money's worth at Lake Wörthersee.

  • On the Slow Trail Yoga Path in Teufelsgraben in Velden, yogis find the perfect flow.
  • Lovers of classical music enjoy harmonious vibes on the Slow Trail Brahms Path in Pörtschach.
  • On the Slow Trail Swing Path, you dive into carefree childhood memories.
  • Those seeking a break from everyday life find the silence of the moment on the Slow Trail Roman Gorge.

Always included: a refreshing cool down in the sparkling waters of Lake Wörthersee or walking barefoot on soft moss cushions while forest bathing.

Gravel Bike & Lost Places – Enjoyable Gravel and Shared Culture

Scene insiders describe the Wörthersee-Rosental region as simple but varied terrain: crisp climbs up to the tree line, fast descents on wide paths, and many lakes with drinking water quality are constant companions on the tours. Here you ride through the landscape enjoyably from the end of March onwards with pleasant temperatures and plenty of sunshine.

Lost Places are also a fixed part of the tours: places with a sometimes dark past that serve as silent memorials in some areas and popular excursion destinations elsewhere. These almost forgotten places can be wonderfully discovered with the gravel bike – a great combination of sport and culture.
