Shortly after Klagenfurt West station, the ascent begins along the forest flank of the Kreuzbergl. A highlight awaits us straight away: a magnificent view over the city vineyard and the eastern bay of Lake Wörthersee - an urban getaway! We hike through wonderful mixed forest on natural forest paths further uphill to the idyllic forest pavilion on the Zillhöhe (536 m) - a dreamy relic of the Wörthersee summer freshness era. Beautiful forest paths then lead down into the Hallegger Senke. The highway briefly torpedoes the scenic harmony, but also encourages you to philosophize about the right speed. The following ascent unfolds a special flair: lonely mixed forest, rural meadow oases, narrow roads and the hidden Hornstein country castle create a landscape full of medieval manorial flair. A scenic gem! Now a forest path meanders almost flat along stately meadows and through secluded parts of the forest. Soon after the inconspicuous highest point (597 m), we reach the steep flank of the Wörthersee basin again with the Suezecke - an old, now overgrown vantage point. Natural forest paths and gravel forest tracks finally lead us down to the railroad station on the edge of the traditional summer resort of Krumpendorf.
Author’s recommendation
Krumpendorf was once an extensive scattered farming settlement on the edge of Lake Wörthersee. With the arrival of the railroad in the late 19th century, summer resorts began to flourish. Today's street village character and the numerous historic summer resort villas still bear witness to this. A typical Wörthersee development!
