From the very beginning, it goes very steeply upwards. This stands for magnificent deep views down into the valley.
Up to the Freiburg Hut (near Formarinsee) the landscape is beautiful.
The way back via Hintergant then offers fewer distant views and I didn't like it as much, next time I would take the same way back.

First, you go up a wonderful but steep path in the forest until you reach the Masonweg (the Masonweg is a road, but a Fiat Panda can't get up there). Then you continue on the Masonweg (which now becomes narrower and narrower) towards Mason Alpe. I find this part particularly beautiful because of the flora and the deep views.Just before Mason Alpe, the path goes left uphill towards Freiburger Hütte / Gwurfjoch.
Then there is another signpost where the trail to Roggelskopf branches off. From here on, the terrain becomes rockier, finally going through scree up to the summit formation. Now you mostly have solid rock under your feet and also need your hands. A few steps require some confidence, but most of it is well secured with steel cables.

Very steep ascent up to the Mason-Alpe, then somewhat gentler up to the Freiburger Hütte (which you reach after about 2.5 hours). From there it continues with a great view of the red wall to over the black Furka. Then you cross the long high valley of the Alpe Faludriga (nature reserve), until it goes back up to the Gamsfreiheit. From there a gravel path leads down into a pine forest, where the path becomes more pleasant again. Then follows a nicely winding single trail up to the Elsspitze. From there the Elsweg leads down to Bludenz, first very steep over gravelly steps, then rooty winding through the forest.
