Pfronten hut hike – winter hike at Edelsberg
Ascent with impressive panoramic views over Pfronten combined with a fast sled ride (please check status) down to the valley.
This ascent is worth it! After all, you are rewarded not only with a stop at the Kappeler Alp and the Hündeleskopf hut but also with a special panorama and the option of a fast descent (whether the sled run is open or not, you find out in the Pfronten winter sports report). The ascent is sweetened by wonderful views of the Alpine foothills all the way to the Ammergau mountains with Neuschwanstein Castle. The descent gives the tour a very special spice: The winter hike partly follows the route of the legendary Schalenggen race. Schalenggen are the traditional horn sleds in Pfronten, which were used in winter to transport wood and hay down to the valley in the past. This wild race keeps the tradition alive once a year during Carnival. Anyone who likes sledding can use the track all winter long.
The start of this beautiful winter hike is in Pfronten-Kappel at the parking lot. From there, you follow the signs towards the Hündeleskopf hut. Those who want can stop there and enjoy vegetarian specialties from the Allgäu. If that's not enough, you can extend the route further and walk on to the Kappeler Alp. After a small refreshment at the hut of your choice, the fast part of the tour begins: the sled ride down to Pfronten Kappel. On your fast descent to the valley, you should definitely watch out for oncoming hikers!

Pfronten winter sports reportRoadbook
Stamina is required for this winter hike, but the reward is plentiful. Walking over open fields, you quickly gain altitude on the cleared forest road. Attention: Sledders are coming towards you! The hay barns recall the tradition of the Schalenggen. Then the path enters the mountain forest. Soon you reach the turnoff to the Hündeleskopf hut. A detour to this small but nice hut is definitely worthwhile. There used to be a lift going up here, so the locals still call it the "Kappeler ski hut". Now it continues to the next place to eat: first through the quiet forest, then in large serpentines over the alpine pasture areas. At the destination awaits the rustic Kappeler Alp with local specialties and a magnificent view.
