Safety information
Bad Weather Alernative: Both via ferratas should be avoided during bad weather conditions. If thunderstorms are forecasted for the afternoon, we recommend doing only the Veronesi Via Ferrata, as that has less exposure to lightning than the Tomaselli Via Ferrata.
This tour should only be undertaken with experience and knowledge of via ferrata safety.
These directions and GPS tracks should be used only as a tool to aid navigation. Roads and trails are not always drawn on digital maps exactly as they are in real life, and trail conditions can change over time, leading to alternate routings. Always watch the trail and pay close attention to the trail signage, especially regarding detours or dangers that may lie on the route. Make safe navigation decisions that consider all of these factors. Never blindly follow a GPS track.
Tips and suggestions
If you know in advance that you will only do Via Ferrata Tomaselli, and will skip Veronesi, it is possible to leave some items at Forcella Gasser Depot, enabling you to do this technical via ferrata with a lighter pack. Please keep all necessary emergency gear with you in your backpack.
Roadbook
Take trail 401 from the hut to Forcella Travenanzes (there is an earlier turnoff to Via Ferrata Tomaselli, but if you plan on doing both ferratas, the route described here creates a loop). Turn left here to ascend to the north on trail 1020 toward Forcella Gasser Depot (war ruins) and Forcella Granda. From here, follow the flat area with building ruins and then the tracks to the entrance to the Tomaselli Via Ferrata (you can see the old ladders). Follow the via ferrata to the summit of the southern Fanesspitze at 2,980 m. Cross over the summit and descend the other side to Forcella dei Quaire (also via ferrata).
From here, it is possible to turn right and return to the hut (see below). Or, if you still have energy to spare and can do another 2 1/2 hours of via ferrata PLUS another 5 km. of hiking with 1,000 m. of elevation gain, continue to the left onto the Veronesi Via Ferrata.
For the Veronesi Via ferrata, descend to the north (left) from Forcella dei Quaire through steep scree and keep left at the rock. You'll traverse a rock band, shortly interupted by a dark tunnel, to a saddle that sits below Cima Scotoni. From here, descend the trail to Forcella d. Lech (also called Forcella del Lago). At Forcella d. Lech, turn left for the steep scree descent from the saddle. The descent is short-lived and followed by a long and sustained climb to the south to Forcella Lagazuoi, and finally back to the hut.
To return from the Tomaselli Via Ferrata (skipping the Veronesi Via Ferrata): It is possible to go back to Rifugio Lagazuoi and avoid the second Via Ferrata. Turn right and return to the Forcella Gasser Depot. From Forcella, Grasser Depot, take trail 1020, which goes down toward the west. Follow the trail, and on the first crossroad, turn left, following trail 1020 toward Rifugio Lagazuoi. After a long traverse on a scree there is a crossroad. The main sign directs you to the right to the main AV1 (Trail 20), losing around 100 meters of elevation before ascending again to Forcella Lagazuoi . If you want to save 100 meters of elevation, you can follow trail 1020 straight forward and get directly to Forcella Lagazuoi. This part requires some attention in direction; the signs are spare and the trail may not reflect correctly in your navigation app. From there, follow the main path to Rifugio Lagazuoi.
Note: the Veronesi Via Ferrata, although technically easier, requires route finding and navigation through difficult terrain (steep and loose scree).
