Rifugio Lagazuoi owns a commanding location on top of a mountain with gorgeous views in all directions. Accessible from the south by cable car, Lagazuoi is also a very popular hut, both with dayhikers during the afternoon on their large outdoor terrace, and in the evening with through-hikers heading in every direction. A night at Lagazuoi is always a special and memorable night.
This area was the scene of much fighting during WWI, and there are a number of informational signs and war relics scattered around the region. Just below the hut, is a long tunnel built during the war by the Italians in an attempt to blow up the Austrian position on top of the mountain. Today, this tunnel is a via ferrata, and a very easy one that can be carefully explored with nothing more than a few good flashlights or headlamps (everybody should have one).
The hut has a large dining room, simple private rooms, a number of dorms of different sizes. There are separate men’s/women’s bathrooms and showers (buy a token for hot water and a towel). Blankets, pillows are provided, and sheets and towels are provided in the rooms, but for dorm, you’ll need to bring a sleep sheet, along with a change of clothes and toiletries. Lagazuoi has disposable sleep sheets for sale.
