Falkenstein Via Ferrata (upper Mürz valley)
Attractive sport via ferrata near the valley
Beautiful via ferrata over a steep wall, with the following advantages: good accessibility, short approach, an alpine hut near the exit, and a comfortable descent via a hiking trail. There is also a long rope bridge and a quick descent for those in a hurry. Styrian heart, what more could you want.
Despite these advantages, not a via ferrata for beginners.
The via ferrata is suitable for persons with a body height of 1.50 m and above, not for children.
The showpiece is the 30-meter three-rope bridge over the gorge of the Mühlbach (Mühlgraben, Krampengully). This rope bridge is long, very high above the abyss, and therefore mentally challenging.
Trained via ferrata climbers with a lot of muscle strength can exert themselves on the difficult pillar variant.
Difficulty:
● Falkenstein Via Ferrata ("Otto's Sun Slabs"): C/D, many high step pins. Small persons have a harder time. Demanding rope bridge.
● Pillar variant ("Heli's Incredible Pillar"): D/E. Most difficult passage immediately after the start, a lot of friction climbing. Continuously difficult, endurance strength required.
Base:
Falkensteinalm, 959 m (in summer Wednesday to Sunday snack station, status May 2022).
You can drive by car up to 400 m before the hut.
Information status: 25.05.2022
Author’s recommendation
The Falkensteinalm is also accessible by mountain bike on a good forest road.
"Mountain Bike Route Falkensteinalm": total 345 meters elevation, 13.5 km, highest point 1094 m. Descriptions available on the internet.

Roadbook
Approach: 70 m elevation, 0:15 h.
The via ferrata starts at the wayside shrine. Along the Mühlbach upwards to the foot of the very steep walls. Information board here. Either shortly right over the brook to the Falkenstein via ferrata (with practice loop and rope bridge), or shortly left upwards to the difficult pillar variant (without rope bridge).
Route: 140 meters elevation, 400 m length, 1:30 h.
Descent: 0:20 h (quick descent) or 0:45 h.
From the exit on a path to the highest point (Falkenstein, 974 m, beautiful view into the Mürz valley). Then straight down to the forest roads. From here two options:
a) Left via the quick descent, first along the summit wall (climbing area from 6b) and then on a newly built path through steep forest back to the wayside shrine.
b) Leisurely via the flat forest road in six minutes to the nearby Falkensteinalm and eastwards on the marked hiking trail back into the Mürz valley.
