Sankt Marie Church

The Marienkirche was built around 1600 on the site of the former town church Sct. Jørgens, enlarged to its present size by Duke Hans the Younger between 1595-1600. Pulpit (1599), altar panels (1618), ducal chair (1625), cast iron baptismal font (1600), crucifix (1500).
Martin with the Flute

Martin with the pipe was born in Silkeborg and named Martin Frederik Christian Jørgensen (1884-1976). Around 1930, Martin came to Sønderborg. He earned his living as a rag picker and did not announce his arrival with a signal horn. However, the citizens were disturbed by the horn, and the police suggested Martin use a whistle instead. He died a poor man but was respected for his kindness and wisdom.

The Gate to the School

Inge Adriansen (1944-2017), art historian, writer, museum curator (Sønderborg Castle), focused particularly on the history of South Jutland, was a member of the Danish Gastronomic Academy, awarded the Order of the Dannebrog in 2006.
Sønderborg Castle
The castle from the 13th century was remodeled into a Renaissance castle in the 16th century. The castle houses a museum with an exhibition about the history and culture of the region.

King Christian II (1481-1559) was held captive in Sønderborg Castle for 12 years. A myth tells that he constantly walked around a round table carving a groove in it with his thumbnail.

The crumpled "paper" symbolizes something that has fallen apart – the yellow color of margarine. The portraits show the owners, directors, and other significant personalities of the Solo margarine factory over the centuries.
The Solo buildings are a residential complex with 150 units built on the site of the former Solo margarine factory (1888-1998).
