And action! The opposite Holy Trinity Church provided the backdrop for a monastery in the film "Grand Budapest Hotel." Turn your gaze to the right onto Obermarkt. Imagine the square without cars. Perfect for a driving scene in "The Monuments Men", which was filmed here.
To reach the next filming location, walk across Obermarkt towards Reichenbacher Tower, cross Obermarkt and turn left into Steinstraße. On the left side is the former Totschek department store, which served as a set both inside and out for the series "Das Haus der Träume" and the film "Es war einmal in Deutschland".
Straight ahead is the Art Nouveau department store, which has had several prominent appearances in films following its history as a department store. In 2013, Wes Anderson created his "Grand Budapest Hotel" here. Almost a decade later, it was brought to life as "Kaufhaus Jonass" in the series "Das Haus der Träume". For "Die Schule der magischen Tiere 3", the old department store was transformed into a natural history museum, where the huge skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus rex was exhibited. You can now admire it at the Saurierpark Kleinwelka.
On the left and right of the main entrance, you will find film display windows arranged with original props. The furniture comes from the shooting of "Das Haus der Träume" and was specially made for it. The contents of the showcase on the left and the clothes in the cloakroom in the right window are loans from the Gerhart-Hauptmann-Theater Görlitz, which is just a few steps from the department store. Please note that currently visits to the department store are only possible as part of guided tours. Under the department store arcades along the display windows, Friederike Becht strolled as "Käthe Kruse" for the film of the same name. In the film "The Reader", Kate Winslet, in the role of conductor Hanna Schmitz, passed the department store by streetcar. She was awarded her first Oscar for this role. She is likely also the most prominent customer of the shoe store Leiser, which you will pass on your way straight ahead to Postplatz.
If you turn your gaze to the left, you will see the entrance to a parking garage. David Hasselhoff was already filming here for "Ze Network".
Postplatz is adorned by the Muschelminna fountain. Although the fountain figure looks glamorous, she has so far been denied a leading role in a film. Past the historic post office building, you reach Jakobstraße. At Jakobstraße 5 by the "Goldenes Tor," the crew of "Fabian oder Der Gang vor die Hunde" not only found a suitable location but also set up quarters. Another set was established at the corner of Wilhelmsplatz/Hospitalstraße. Görlitz doubled for Berlin and Dresden in the film.
At house no. 5a, the film production set up the apartment of Michael Berg's family for the film "The Reader". Today, offices are located there and various rooms can be rented. The film apartment of Hanna Schmitz, played by Kate Winslet, was located at Landeskronstraße 18. Follow Jakobstraße to Bahnhofstraße. On the left at the corner, you will see the Filmpalast Görlitz. Originally built as a hotel, the building has been rebuilt several times. Since 1920, it has been used as a cinema. The quarter-round facade impressed Quentin Tarantino so much during his visit to Görlitz that he used it as a model for his cinema in the film "Inglourious Basterds."
You now have two options to continue your route:
1) From the Filmpalast, continue left along Bahnhofstraße to reach Augustastraße. Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck filmed scenes here as well as on Holteisstraße for his Oscar®-nominated film "Werk ohne Autor". Turn right into Emmerichstraße. House no. 41 was the home of Anna and Otto Quangel in the film "Every Man Dies Alone", played by Emma Thompson and Brendan Gleeson. Görlitz was also a filming location for an earlier version of the Fallada novel. In the area, further scenes were also filmed for the TV two-part series "Der Turm" and the film comedy "Es war einmal in Deutschland".
Follow the street straight ahead to Dr.-Kahlbaum-Allee. A small detour to the right leads you to the outdoor swimming pool. Founded in 1887, it was in use until 1996. Briefly, it was revived as a "bath" for the film "Grand Budapest Hotel". Opposite is the Tivoli, where a bowling alley is located; it was converted into a sports bar for some parts of "Wolfsland".
If you follow the Oder-Neisse cycle path a little further to the right, the impressive Neisse Viaduct rises before you. A scene for "Fabian oder Der Gang vor die Hunde" was filmed here, which actually takes place in Dresden, home of the novel's author Erich Kästner.
If you continue along the cycle path, you will come to the left-hand exit to the Landskron Brau-Manufaktur, where beer has been brewed since 1869. The brewery also gained fame as a filming location, for example as the port of New York in the remake of the classic "Around the World in 80 Days" with Jackie Chan or as a chocolate factory in the Swiss production "Papa Moll oder Die Entführung des fliegenden Hundes". A detour is worthwhile to take a break in the visitor center and refresh yourself or participate in a tour.
Via Sattigstraße, you reach Jakobstunnel and return to the Filmpalast. You can take your return route via Jakobstraße or continue your walk towards the station as described under 2).
2) Take a small detour to the right to Görlitz station, which received an impressive Art Nouveau entrance building in 1917. A look inside the station hall is worthwhile. Several dramatic and emotional greeting and farewell scenes were filmed on the platforms, including for "The Book Thief", "The Silent Classroom", and the Indonesian film "Habibie und Ainun".
From the station, you can follow the tram tracks straight ahead along Berliner Straße. The entrance area on the right, the former Hotel "Vier Jahreszeiten," served as a filming location for the TV film "Nicht mir mir, Liebling". Parts of the feature films "Fabian oder Der Gang vor die Hunde" and "Der Hauptmann" were also filmed in the upper part of Berliner Straße. About halfway along Berliner Straße, there is a pedestrian traffic light. A few steps to the right on Hospitalstraße in front of Kings Pub, filming took place for "Ze Network".
From the pedestrian traffic light, continue left on Hospitalstraße to Krölstraße, across the light, and then left to Lutherplatz. When you reach the end of the square, keep left on Landeskronstraße until you reach Leipziger Straße or the so-called Leipziger Platz. Here you are in the middle of a film set for "Every Man Dies Alone", which stretches straight ahead to Hilgerstraße. On Bautzener Straße, right, is the entrance to the former yeast factory, which served as a setting for a "Wolfsland" crime thriller inside. Walk straight ahead until you reach the intersection of Teichstraße/Demianiplatz. On the right, you will see the theater. On the stage, David Hasselhoff and Henry Hübchen acted in the spy thriller "Ze Network".
Via Demianiplatz, you return to Obermarkt and the Görlitz Information, your starting point.
The route from filming location to filming location, offered via the SmartGuide app, is even more extensive. It covers around 45 km with 36 stations throughout the city and beyond. You don't have to complete the route in one day, entirely, or exclusively on foot. You set the pace and where you start or end. Download the app and off you go! Your walk can be well combined with a bike ride that takes you to the south of the city to Berzdorfer See and the Miejski Dom Kultury in Zgorzelec. You can rent bikes at the Görlitz Information or from other providers.
