After the Silesian Mountain Railway and the Berlin-Görlitz Railway also reached the station in the following years, the station building was extended for the first time and doubled in size. But even this extension could not meet the increasing demands of passenger and freight traffic for long. In the early years of the 20th century, it was decided to separate the two functions and a separate goods station was built on the outskirts of the town in Schlauroth in 1906-1909.
The current station building was built between 1913 and 1917. It was designed by architect Alexander Rüdell and government architect Gotthard Eckert. Particularly impressive is the large reception hall with its 13-metre-high barrel vault, which is lit from the north and south by 5 large windows. The current appearance of this room dates back to a renovation in 1984. At that time, the hall was placed under a preservation order and restored to its original state. Only one of the two original waiting rooms can still be experienced. It is used for various cultural events under the name "Gleis 1".
Parallel to the construction of the new station building, a new main post office was built to the east of it in the direction of Jakobstraße, which was operated on this site until 1995. A technical curiosity was also preserved for a long time. This main post office was connected to the post office building on Postplatz with a pneumatic tube system.
This point is also a stop on our audio guide.
There is an electric charging station in front of the station.
