WELCOME to the historical city walk through Sinsheim
Since Sinsheim's first mention in the Lorscher Codex in 770 AD, the cityscape has been in constant change. The walk takes you to important historical sites of the city's history. Sinsheim is still considered the center of the Kraichgau region. The place developed over a long process from a simple rural settlement into a fully formed city. A first step was in 1067 when Count Zeisolf received market and minting rights for Sinsheim. The founding of the monastery on Michaelsberg at the beginning of the 12th century also promoted the growth of the associated settlement in the valley, which at that time could show fortifications. However, the decisive milestone was the upgrade to an imperial city. In 1192, the Staufer Emperor Henry VI secured a significant share of the ruling rights over Sinsheim through a contract with the abbot and granted the inhabitants valuable privileges. However, this did not last long, as the city was repeatedly pledged. In 1362, Elector Ruprecht I finally released Sinsheim from the pledge. Thereafter, the city on the Elsenz remained Electoral Palatinate for almost 450 years – with all the consequences. From 1806, Sinsheim blossomed as an administrative city of the Grand Duchy of Baden.
