Challenging trail route around the Rötelstein (Rettenstein) with alpine sections. Snowfields are to be expected, especially on the Linzer Trail between Sulzenhals and Hofpürglhütte until June (poles are advantageous).

The varied trail running route around Filzmoos impresses with stunning views of the Dachstein Massif, flowing alpine trails, and charming mountain huts along the way. Starting at the Filzmoos Experience Portal, the route leads via Filzwiese and Nösslerriedel up to Bachlalm, where around 1,000 meters of elevation gain are already completed at Sulzenhals. From there, a breathtaking panoramic trail towards Hofpürglhütte awaits, offering unique mountain scenery and true alpine atmosphere. The return route passes Unterhofalm and Oberhofalm on varied trails and hiking paths back down into the valley. Along the way, alpine huts, the Almsee lake, and a small chapel invite runners to take short breaks. This tour combines challenging climbs with long, runnable downhill sections and offers a pure nature experience in the heart of the Austrian Alps. Optionally, the return can be shortened by taking the Fidibus Summer hiking bus or a taxi.

    Tips and suggestions

Due to the risk of injury, running in regular road shoes is not recommended.

A few tips to make your run more enjoyable:

    •  Leave everyday stress behind and enjoy exercising in the fresh air and beautiful natural surroundings.
    • Reach your goal step by step! Training should match your fitness level, age, and running distance. Increase mileage gradually.
    • Pay attention to proper running technique and an ideal breathing rhythm.
    • Running should be fun! Monotony is the beginning of the end, so keep varying your route, distance, and intensity.
    • Light stretching before training, but especially after running, helps keep muscles flexible and less prone to injury.
    • Cool down with an easy jog or walk. Every workout should be followed by recovery — the harder the effort, the longer the recovery time needed.
    • Nutrition tip: Avoid solid food about 2 hours before running, but drink plenty of fluids (fresh spring water) before and during your run. After running, replenish carbohydrate stores with pasta, potatoes, grains, rice, and similar foods.
    • Clothing should wick sweat away from the body and be breathable. Proper running shoes should provide an optimal fit (with about a finger’s width of space at the front), cushioning, stability, natural rolling motion, and breathability.

Please respect local guidelines for the protection of nature.Kompass / Freitag und Bernt / Alpine Club map (AV map)

    Roadbook

From the Filzmoos Experience Portal, we immediately cross to the other side of the street and climb the steps to the church; then descend the asphalt road to the right and follow the road towards Bischofsmütze. After 500 m, turn right after the Intersport Flory and follow the sign "Bachlalm over Filzwiese" (614) to the Filzwiese. At the junction on the Filzwiese (km 3), turn left and descend briefly on the forest road in the woods until at km 3.8 the trail "Bachlalm/Nössler Riedel" continues to the right. Now the path ascends until km 5, afterwards you can enjoy a beautiful alpine trail with a view towards the Dachstein massif up to the Bachlalm (km 6.8). At km 7, the path goes up to the left (no signpost, but clearly visible) to Sulzenhals (km 9), and already 1000 meters of altitude have been conquered! Now you can look forward to a wonderful panoramic path (617/601) to Hofpürglhütte. However, snowfields should be expected here until June. Initially, the path continues uphill to Sulzenschneid (km 9.6). Below the cross, follow the path to the left. At the junction at Rinderfeld (km 12), take path 601 towards Hofpürglhütte. Only 500 m further, there is an exit option that would already lead us down to Almsee and Oberhofalm. Otherwise, continue on path 601 up to km 14.6. At the junction, keep left; after one km, you can either stop at the Hofpürglhütte, which is already in sight, or turn left down to Unterhofalm and Oberhofalm. A well runnable downhill trail leads down to Unterhofalm for the next 2 km. From Oberhofalm, a small detour to Almsee or the small chapel is possible before heading back to the valley. However, those who have had enough after stopping at the Hofalms can, if necessary, get a ride with the horse-drawn carriage to Filzmoos; otherwise, we pass Oberhofalm and first walk down the forest road towards the valley and then follow the well-marked hiking trail again. At km 22.2: stay right at the alpine meadow junction; it is not marked... otherwise you come too early to the asphalt road. At km 21.3: already in the village, do not cross the bridge, but keep left along the Mandling on the hiking trail. Here at the end, there is a Kneipp facility; then return the rest on the road.

Places to eat: Bachlalm, Hofpürglhütte, Unterhofalm, Oberhofalm
