Mountain circuit - Mendiko itzulia
Biarritz-Pays basque
Not to be missed:
• Castle of the Barons of Ezpeleta. The name Espelette and the name of the castle, whose etymology means “place planted with boxwood,” come from a noble family of Navarre where boxwood abounds. The barons of Ezpeleta built the castle around the year 1000 and were masters of it until 1707 after the extinction of the French branch of the family in 1694.
• Pottok at the pass of the three crosses. The pottok "small horse" in the Basque language, pronounced "potioc." It would not exceed 1.32 meters. With its black, bay, or chestnut coat, the pottok most often lives in the mountains in the wild, semi-freely, going up and down the Basque mountains all year round, perfectly adapting to its environment.

Roadbook
1. Haranea. Market square, near the village center and a large parking lot, opposite the Doxpi restaurant. From the market square, pass in front of the castle. At the intersection (in front of the police station), take the RD 918 to the left for 150 m, then turn right opposite the greengrocer. After a fairly steep climb, reach the Haranea district.
2. The Amezketa pass. Cross the RD and continue straight ahead for 125 m to the intersection. Take left onto the road that climbs in switchbacks. Don't miss on the right the path that climbs through ferns and gorse and joins a track to be followed to the right. On the Escondray plateau, at the intersection, continue straight ahead along the mountainside. After the slope peat bogs, turn left towards the Amezketa pass and its coniferous forest.
3. Gaineko Borda. Take right towards the Pic du Mondarrain. Do not stray from the markings throughout the ascent which crosses a beech forest and rocky scree. You will be rewarded by the superb panoramic view from the summit. After a steep descent, the path turns into a track and reaches the Zuharreta pass and the GR®10. Follow the GR®10 to the right, along the wide dirt road to the small pass.
4. Mehaxea. Leave the GR®10 quickly and take right, the track that climbs fairly steeply to a flat area. Rejoin the previously left track at the Trois Croix pass. At the pass, don't miss the path that descends to the right, towards the valley. Join the paved road. At the place called “Haltia,” take this road to the Mehaxea farm where you will join the GR®8. After following a fence on the right, descend to the valley. Cross the Latsa stream. The village is not far away anymore.
