The Grüner Ring Trail connects the entire loop around Lech, Zürs, and Zug in a challenging trail running route. Passing through Oberlech and the Gipslöcher, the trail initially offers easy running to the Balmalpe, before a steep downhill through the Sagenwald leads to Zug. After the long climb to the Madlochjoch and the descent past Lake Zürs, a technically demanding finale awaits with the Rüfikopf and the Schafalpweg.

    Roadbook

The route starts at the Dorfhus in Lech. Right from the start, the trail leads you steadily uphill to Oberlech and on to the striking gypsum caves all the way to the Balmalpe. Despite the elevation gain, this first section is easy to run and already offers impressive views. From here, a steep downhill section

    takes

you through the Sagenwald forest down to Zug.

This is followed by the long and technically challenging climb to the Madlochjoch. This section requires endurance and sure-footedness. Once at the top, a breathtaking panorama unfolds before the trail leads down past Lake Zürs to Zürs. After a short stretch on the road, the next climb begins—first on forest roads, then on narrower trails toward Rüfikopf.

The route concludes with a steep and technically demanding downhill run along the Schafalpweg, which once again requires your full concentration. Back in Lech, you’ll run at a relaxed pace through the town to the starting point at the Dorfhus.

The Grüne Ring Trail is a challenging, varied loop with a constant alternation of uphills and downhills—ideal for experienced trail runners in good physical condition.

    Public transport

Trains, both local and long-distance, regularly stop at the St. Anton am Arlberg and Langen am Arlberg train stations. From there, you can take the bus (Line 750/760) to Lech am Arlberg.

    Transportation

    Parking

You can either park your vehicle directly at your host's place or in the Anger underground parking garage. The underground parking garage is located right in the town center, next to the Dorfhus.

    Equipment

For alpine trail running routes, we recommend the following gear: Trail running shoes with good traction are essential for varied terrain and narrow trails. Opt for breathable, technical clothing in layers, along with a lightweight windbreaker or rain jacket, since the weather in the mountains can change quickly. Bringing plenty of fluids and energy should be just as much a given as a small running backpack. Trail running poles can provide noticeable relief and extra stability on both ascents and longer descents.
