The “Sweet Route” – sugar and beet route through the Magdeburg Börde
The Magdeburg Börde has a long agricultural and cultural-historical tradition. For over 180 years, the “White Gold of the Börde” – the sugar beet – has been cultivated here. Tracing the history of sugar, learning about current processing, tasting regionally typical cuisine and local products are aims of this tourism offer. Tourist businesses, museums and local companies can be individually visited in sections depending on guest interests. More than 20 experiences range from country inns to star-rated hotels, from historic castles to climbing a potash spoil heap. Since production sites and small museums often have no fixed visiting hours, the network has organized a “Day of the Sweet Route” annually in mid-October since 2008, attracting increasing visitor numbers.
