Salmon Experience Trail Murgtal - Forbach section
Salmon in the Murg? Oh yes! They were gone for 100 years but are now returning! Learn more on the sections of the salmon experience trail.
The Forbach section of the salmon experience trail is divided into two parts with different characters.
The first part runs as a loop trail on both sides of the Murg at the height of the settlement area. Here you learn why fish need to migrate, salmon even more than 700 kilometers upstream from the sea, and why this was not possible for them for 100 years. At EnBW's hydro fish lift, you can watch a film via QR code showing how fish are now lifted over the 7 m high dam. You immerse yourself in the myth world of the wild Murg, which already made English fly fishermen shudder 150 years ago and meet illegal anglers as well as dedicated conservationists.
The second part takes you through a narrow valley that has retained its original character. The valley is so narrow here that there is no path along the Murg, instead the Murg loops have to be cut repeatedly, uphill and downhill.
Here you learn about who likes to eat fish and what is needed to provide fish with a good habitat. Wonderful nature and magnificent photo opportunities await you in the "Hölle". You can also read more here about the difficult relationship between hydro power use and the fish.
On the other sections of the salmon experience trail there are many other exciting topics. For example, you can fly with a drone via QR code from Baiersbronn to Rastatt and even dive underwater!

Tips and suggestions

The path was officially inaugurated on 11 July, but intermediate signposting and some info boards are still missing. However, the path can basically be walked.

Roadbook
Starting at Forbach train station, follow Eckstraße to the Forbach wooden bridge. Turn left here up the footpath to Schifferstraße. After reaching the street, first cross it and then a few meters further, also cross the railway line via the bridge. After the bridge, turn right onto the gravel field path running parallel to the railway tracks. Follow this path until the edge of the village is nearly reached on the other side of the railway, then gently turn right downwards through the railway underpass back onto Schifferstraße. Turn left here until after about 100m Schifferstraße and Eckstraße meet. Turn right into Eckstraße and stay on it until the weir system of the Rudolf-Fettweis plant is reached. Cross the Murg on the weir. At the foot of Werkstraße, turn right down the stairs and walk through the houses to Rudolf-Fettweis-Straße. Then keep left and head back towards the village. After a left bend in the street, turn right into Murgstraße. Stay on this street until the main road is reached. Go straight ahead through the passage between the houses to Stried. The street leads down to the right to Murghalle and Murggarten. In front of the hall stands the large info salmon. Passing it, you reach Murggarten via the wooden terrace.
From here, a footpath with stairs leads up along the central axis of the facility to the federal road. On the sidewalk, go right up to the bridge over the Murg. You can end the short loop here by crossing the bridge and directly return to the starting point at the train station.
Those who don't want to miss the more adventurous part of the route must cross the federal road here and immediately after the intersection turn right from Friedrichstraße into Eulenfelsenstraße (If crossing the federal road here feels too dangerous, a small detour to use the traffic light at the train station is possible).
At the end of Eulenfelsenstraße cross the parking lot, then the footpath runs first along the canal and then along the Murg to the sports ground of SV Forbach. Along the edge of the ground, go behind it up the forest path to the so-called gravel pit. Here, above the Murg, there is a viewing pavilion.
The footpath branching off to the right after the climb leads toward the federal road. After a small flight of stairs and then left along behind the guardrails, you can reach the Montana swimming center. Before the stairs, a forest path leads left down to one of the most idyllic sections of the Murg riverbank. However, this is only a detour from the main route. Those who return by the same way go straight ahead, coming from the sports ground turn left, and continue uphill following the forest path to the next hairpin bend. From here, turn right and go gently downhill, increasingly path-like, through the forest toward the Murg riverbank and the "Hölle". Before the strenuous ascent to Bermersbach, turn right to the riverbank opposite the Tennetschlucht viaduct. Certainly one of the most beautiful spots on the route.
Return to the junction and then go up the hill. First, a high-voltage line is crossed, then a field path is reached, and the vegetation alternates with the first meadows. Continuing on the field path, you reach Brunnenhalde Bermersbach. Turn right on the street to the intersection with Bermersbachstraße, then sharply right again downhill leaving the built-up area. At the forest edge, left again on a forest path downhill toward Langenbrand. In the valley floor pass the two houses and briefly uphill over the access road to K3754. Turn right here for a short stretch on the roadway before continuing on the sidewalk to cross the Murg.
Here either turn right over the Murg and then continue on the sidewalk left to the Langenbrand stop, which marks the end of the Forbach section, or before the bridge turn left uphill into the Weisenbach section of the salmon experience trail, which then leads for another three kilometers above or along the Murg to the Au stop.
