At numerous stations along the 8 km long, very scenic circular route, you can learn interesting facts about the double battle of Jena and Auerstedt in 1806, whether about the course of the battle, the soldiers, or the hardships endured by the population. But nature topics such as orchids, fruit trees or landscape management are also the focus.

More than 200 years ago, history was made on the Windknollen near Jena: The French army under Napoleon defeated the Prussian army and paved the way for far-reaching changes.

The route starts at the museum "Memorial 1806" in Cospeda, passes the battlefield of Windknollen and goes to Dornberg, the site of the first major clash between the French and Prussian troops. But the hiking trail also offers some beauties for nature lovers. For example, the Napoleon Path runs through the Windknollen nature reserve with many rare plant and animal species as well as through the Nature Study Grove.

The hike becomes a real experience with the natura jenensis app. Maybe you will encounter Napoleon or real lawnmowers on 4 legs along the way!

    Roadbook

From the bus stop "Cospeda" walk into the play street "Im Ziehgarten" and keep to the right. The street rises gently uphill and changes into a black gravel path. Follow this half left and you will reach the "Closewitzer Weg" which you turn right onto. Pass the inn "Zur Linde" with the possibility of stopping for refreshments and then turn left into Jenaer Straße. Follow the signs diagonally right towards the museum and you will reach the starting point of the Napoleon Path directly opposite the "Museum 1806". Orient yourself towards the "Napoleonstein". On a paved path, you pass a barrier. Then come hedges, and in places, there is a clear view over the wide fields to the Coppanzer Höhe, the Fuchsturm and the Kernberge. You pass the stations "Napoléon" and "Vögel". Here you turn left onto a meadow path that leads you gently uphill. Follow the markings on the stones straight ahead and then turn left onto the main path, which goes uphill to the Napoleonstein. Once at the top, you will find a station at the Napoleonstein and enjoy the view. There is the possibility of taking a rest on a bench. Continue northeast, following the markings. You look out over the wide open land with grass and rosehip bushes. From afar you can already see the next station "Soldaten". The hiking trail leads straight ahead up a small hill to the signpost. Enjoy the view towards Jenzig and the horseshoe with the Kunitzburg before turning left towards "Closewitz". Pay attention to the markings on the stones and let your gaze wander into the distance. You pass the station "Windknollen"; at the fork in the road stay straight on the main path. At the intersection with the turquoise stone slabs, keep diagonally left and enjoy the view towards Golmsdorf and Kunitzburg. The distinctive solitary tree on the right is the Napoleon Oak. The path goes through several small hollows and past temporary ponds to the station "Himmelsteiche". The hiking trail now turns diagonally left and then leads you along the fence on the right into a small wood, the Nature Study Grove. After a few meters, you reach the station "Angriff". Follow the signpost towards "Closewitz" through the grove.

About 200 meters after the second signpost, turn left, leave the grove, walk to the right of a ditch to the entrance of Closewitz at a crossroads. Cross the road and follow the marking into the street next to the field for about 350 m. After the left curve, continue straight on a stony field path lined with fruit trees. You now reach the station "Paving Stones". Past hedges and fields, follow the field path northwest. The hiking trail turns left at the edge of the forest, but take the detour to the station "Tree Myths". A field path leads southwest to the federal highway which you cross. Here at the station "Battle of Jena and Auerstedt" you will find a seating area and the majestic Jahn Oak. Follow the field edge southwards. After about 100 meters, turn right into the forest. The marking leads you through a dense grove first southwest and then southeast. Cross the road and continue straight ahead to the field where you now walk left along the field edge next to a hedge heading south. You reach the station about the suffering of the population during the battles. The hiking trail now leads along the planted row of fruit trees. Let your gaze wander left towards Cospeda. Pass the station "Fruit Trees" and finally cross the road, then turn left. After a few meters, follow the marking to the right. You reach a narrow meadow path between fruit trees and meadows. On the left is the Ziskauer Valley into which you turn left or follow the bonus round "Ziskauer Valley" with an additional 1.6 kilometers. At the station "Landscape Management" turn left and follow the field path upstream. After about 100 meters, cross the stream on the right. Then continue diagonally uphill along a meadow towards the row of fruit trees. Follow the fruit trees southwest. The meadow path now rises gently uphill and you reach another station. The hiking trail crosses a high-voltage power line on the left, heading southeast to the station "Climate Meadow". You have now reached the urban area of Cospeda. Follow the "Lützerodaer Weg" straight ahead. After a left curve you reach the bus stop "Cospeda", the starting point of the Napoleon Path.
