The easy-to-walk Lumman route showcases the cultural sites along the Oulujoki River on the way over the Jylhämä hydroelectric dam to the lower canal resting place.
The name Lumman route comes from Viktor Åkerblom (1844–1895), the last patron of the Vaalan Myllyranta ironworks, who was called Lumma. Åkerblom lived in Ahmala at the Paaso house, from which he expanded into a residence and merchant mansion. Later, the Uleå company, which owned Ahmala, built apartments for engineers in the courtyard area. The company leased Ahmala in 1926 to the Finnish Tourist Association as the Vaala hotel. The hotel was mainly used by white water rafters until it was destroyed during the Winter War bombings. Today, the Ahmala courtyard still contains a residential building and a warehouse building, the cellars located at the stone base of the hotel building, a stone stable, and a courtyard sauna.
The unmarked route starting from the Ahmala courtyard is easy to walk but somewhat challenging for first-timers to determine where the route goes. It is recommended to follow the route track on a phone or map. The route is maintained by the municipality of Vaala.

The Lumman route starts from the courtyard area of Ahmala, about 1.5 km from the center of Vaala at the intersection of Jylhämäntie and Lummantie. At the beginning of the route, about 500 meters in, on the left blooms a sunflower field in late summer, and on the right is a boat launch site. After 2.7 km the road reaches an intersection with Vanhantie and continues over the Jylhämä hydroelectric dam. After the dam, the route turns left onto a gravel road (a sign directs to the boat launch). On the right is a field, and the gravel road descends toward the boat launch. Opposite is a gravel road accessible also by car, and the lower canal flows on the left. At 4.7 km there is a lean-to shelter, a fire pit, an outhouse, and a boat launch. The route returns on the same trail back to the starting point.
