Lovrenc Willomitzer botanical path
Lovrenc Willomitzer (circa 1747 - 1801) was a Slovenian field doctor and mountaineer. He was among the first four to ascend Triglav.
Baron Žiga Zois appointed him as a field doctor in Stara Fužina in 1776, and he also conducted natural science explorations in the Bohinj mountains. In 1783, he bought a hut in Stara Fužina, which still carries the house nickname "pri Padarju" today. Already in 1777, on Zois's order, he accompanied B. Hacquet on a trip to Triglav. They only reached Veli Polje, while Hacquet alone climbed Mali Triglav. Lovrenc Willomitzer succeeded in reaching the summit on 26 August 1778 as a member of the "Four Brave Men" expedition.
The vegetation around the Devil's Bridge is extremely rich. Here we have both dry habitats with thermophilic flora, where black hornbeam, small ash, and brilliant scabious grow, as well as smaller wetlands around the lehnjak waterfall, where at the beginning of summer you will see the insectivorous Alpine butterwort, and by the end of summer the marsh sundew, which Slovenians poetically call the Christ's shirt.
Wild orchids also have habitats here. Many can be enchanted by the fly orchid.
In the shady undergrowth of the mixed forest, everything smells of cowslips or lemon balm in May. Early spring will delight you with white and pink flowers of black hellebore, blue flowers of hepatica, and yellow trumpet flowers. Towards the end of summer, delicate cyclamens give off fragrance here.
On the pasture, you will find several medicinal plants: heal-all, motherwort, woundwort, and heart's ease.
