The Kiwi Trail has a length of 2.5 km and is a circular hiking route.
The short route has a historical background. It begins at the cemetery parking lot and leads past the crash site of a British bomber. On the night of September 5 to 6, 1943, the four-engine British bomber (the Short Stirling EE893) crashed. Among the occupants were New Zealand soldiers, called "Kiwis." A memorial stone commemorates the crash. For those interested, an information board provides details about the crash and the crew.
The path continues through the Ritzental. The fields here were still cultivated until the 1980s. At the end of the 1970s, parts of the valley were reforested. Today, mostly spruces and Douglas firs grow here. After a short climb, you reach the Wasgau hut of the Schwanheim PWV. It is open year-round on Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday, and public holidays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
From here, you walk back to the starting point at the cemetery via the old Wehrmacht road and a path.
#BeCareful! For consideration and nature conservation
Hiking, strolling, wandering, cycling, mountain biking, climbing, trekking, picnicking, forest bathing, chilling and stopping for refreshments. Vacation and leisure in the fresh air should be fun and above all relaxing. This works best when we handle ourselves, other people, and nature carefully and attentively. SO: BE CAREFUL AND THINK AHEAD! Be considerate of everyone on the way and especially of nature, so that we can still enjoy it in the distant future.
At www.pfalz.de/uffbasse we have listed some behavior tips for a considerate and careful coexistence.

Despite the marking of the hiking trails, we recommend for safety reasons to always have an appropriate hiking map with you so that, for example, in the event of a thunderstorm or emergency, you can quickly find a safe area.
Particularly in autumn, it should also be noted that leaves lying on the ground can obscure unevenness, roots, stones or holes in the path. After storms, trees may also still fall or branches may fall afterwards. Especially in adverse weather conditions, natural paths may have muddy and slippery sections. One must expect such path impairments when undertaking a hike. Not all rocks or cliffs are secured with ropes or railings. Surefootedness is partly required. If you think you cannot walk certain sections of the path, you should bypass them.
