From the panoramic porphyry balcony of Col Margherita, an easy path accompanies you on a journey through time, among ancient volcanoes, imposing glaciers, fossil sea bottoms and geological eras that have shaped this unique landscape.
At over 2,500 meters altitude runs the Geo Walk, a renewed thematic route that combines nature, play and geology. Designed with the collaboration of the Ludosofici association and the scientific consultancy of geologist Claudio Valle, the 7-stage loop engages visitors of all ages with interactive and playful-educational installations that transform the history of the UNESCO Dolomites into an interactive adventure. Volcanoes, glaciers, seabeds, islands and fossils accompany the journey through the ancient eras of the Earth.
The symbolic heart of the route is the panoramic helm, located right on the summit. Completing the experience are a large timeline and didactic panels with stimulating activities, perfect for learning while observing the landscape. An adventure suspended between science and wonder, to be experienced step by step.

A journey through time among the rocks of Col Margherita
Between 290 and 276 million years ago, this area was the site of massive explosive volcanic eruptions, which gave rise to the rocks of Col Margherita. The ground you walk on is a platform of brown-reddish rocks, called Ignimbrites (from Latin ignis = fire and imber = rain) or quartz-porphyries. These rocks were formed from the solidification of a magma that emerged from large volcanic cracks. The magma rapidly expanded for kilometers, forming glowing flows and giving rise to the South Tyrolean Porphyry Platform, a gigantic blanket of porphyries over 2 km thick and covering an area of almost 4,000 km², extending to Bolzano and Trento.

Family walk at Col Margherita
Reach Passo San Pellegrino (11 km from Moena) by car or public transport, then take the cable car to Col Margherita, with departures every 30 minutes. Upon arrival, go around the station passing in front of the InAlto bar restaurant, the only refreshment point in the area. Follow the rocky stepped path that gently ascends the slope, leading you shortly to a natural porphyry platform, offering a boundless view of all the Dolomites. A wide path will guide you to the interactive installations, located a short distance from each other. The return is along the same route.
A unique place, between science and breathtaking views
Col Margherita, starting point of the La VolatA track, is also a privileged observatory on air quality. According to data detected by the CNR station located at the summit (2,520 m), here you breathe pure air comparable to that of the Arctic Circle. The ozone values recorded are slightly lower than those measured in Ny Ålesund, on the Svalbard islands (Norway), the northernmost inhabited town in the world, where the Zeppelin station is located. Above Falcade and Passo San Pellegrino, the air is as clear as in Ny Ålesund, home of the CNR scientific base Dirigibile Italia. Two extraordinary places with unparalleled panoramas: one overlooking the Greenland Sea, the other over the majestic Dolomite peaks, from the south face of Marmolada to the Pale di San Martino.
